Terps enter '23 with back-to-back bowl wins.

7 wins in '21, 8 wins in '22.

Does Taulia stay or go?

Lost firepower at WR and TE; but you've still got weapons (Felton, Smith, Dyches) at both spots.

The RB's are strong.

Losing Duncan at OT, but added Dumervil as a Transfer.

Dline loses some experience, but Transfers Phillips, and Brown will help offset that.

Barham, and Hyppolite nice starting pieces at LB.

Secondary should continue to be good, with Transfers Sheppard, and Williams offsetting the departures.

Overall roster wise... how do you feel about the 2nd string across the board?

- Step 0 is improving the facilities. (Check)

- Step 1 is stacking classes... (Check) 2023 Class Rank is 33rd, was 31st last year, 18th in '21, 31st in '20...

- Step 2 is getting into the bowl cycle. Increased practices, etc.  (Check)

- Step 3 is not being run off the field in games against the best, winning all the games you should, and winning some of the toss up games. Springing the occasional upset.  Some good signs here in '22, but more work to be done.

- Step 4 is defending your homefield.  Work to be done, and improving the atmosphere should be a priority for the University, not just the Athletic Department.

- Step 5 is jumping into the back of the Top 25.

2023 Games:

Expected Wins (over 80% chance of winning): Towson, Charlotte

Expected Losses (over 80% chance of losing): @Ohio State, Michigan
Likely Wins (60 to 79% chance of winning): Indiana, @Northwestern, @Rutgers
Likely Losses (60 to 79% chance of losing): Penn State
Coin Flip (45 to 59% either way): Virginia, @Michigan State, Illinois, @Nebraska

Chasing Down Penn State

Ohio State and Michigan are currently another stratosphere.
Penn State is the 3rd best team in the division. Consistently Top 20. Recruits well in your backyard.
MD over the next 2-3 years needs to close the gap there.
Goals of a Top 3 finish in the division and Top 25 appearance possible...but how MD plays against PSU going forward will be really telling.

My Slogan For '23 = No Steps Back

Looking for 8 regular season wins.

Sounds like, barring some sort of massive shift, QB Taulia Tagovailoa will be back next year. He apparently seriously considered entering the transfer portal, but is expected to return.

Yea I don’t see closing the gap with Penn state. We play home games with thousands of empty seats. They play home games in front of 100,000 people and are in the Rose Bowl today (albeit cuz Michigan and OSU made the playoff but still)

Just not sure how we can out recruit them.

As expected, OL Johari Branch announced he's declaring for the NFL Draft.

Seems like an anti-climactic announcement, as I'm fairly certain he was out of eligibility.

Real bottomline...  there is nothing MD can do in 5 years or 10 years or 15 years to completely catch-up.
PSU Football means more to their fanbase, than MD Football means to the MD fanbase.
And obviously their history is better.

There is nothing MD can do to change the history, or change the interest in PSU football that their fans have.... all MD can do, is concern themselves with MD.

Few things MD has to do there imo...

- Can't lose the H2H recruiting battles with local talent to PSU.

- PSU is the game MD needs to show up for annually. Can't expect a win annually, but it needs to be a fight every time, and you have to win more than occasionally.

- Whatever PSU is doing NIL wise, that's who you've got to try and emulate.

- Keep working to improve the game day experience.   We know MD faces more competition for the discretionary spending money of their fans vs. a school like PSU.  Just more to do in the Washington / Baltimore areas.  But if you can't sell the tickets right now, you still need to be filling the stands.  Give away tickets to High Schools, First Responders, Teachers, Gov workers, alumni, etc.  Fill the stadium.   Get people used to coming to the games, and learning to support the product.  Better experience for everyone.  When you get good enough, and there is higher demand... you don't have to do that.  Not doing that now when demand is still minimal is a waste of time and opportunity.

Pregame...  encourage a number of different local breweries, distilleries, and bbq companies to set-up and have tastings etc.  Give them space, and whatever further incentive needed to set-up.

- Also need to regularly beat Michigan State, Indiana, and Rutgers... so you get to the point where it looks like you are clearly above that trio.  (Michigan State's success as a program in the 2010's probably provides a good blueprint or reminder that larger success is possible.)

OL Spencer Anderson announced he’s declaring for the NFL Draft. At one point he looked likely to return for next season, but it became clear lately that wouldn’t be happening.

There are still a few pending moves, but here's how I'm projecting the depth chart to shake out as of today. If Maryland lands Nyckoles Harbor, I'd expect him to slide into a co-starter role at TE with Corey Dyches (both would also see time split wide and in the slot). If they land the Harris twins, they'd be 2nd/3rd string inside linebackers.

OFFENSE

QB: 1. Taulia Tagovailoa, 2. Billy Edwards, Jr.

RB: 1. Roman Hemby, 2. Antwain Littleton II

WR (X): 1. Tai Felton, 2. Shaleak Knotts

WR (Z): 1. Jeshaun Jones, 2. Kaden Prather

WR (H): 1. Tyrese Chambers OR Octavian Smith, Jr.

TE: 1. Corey Dyches, 2. Dylan Wade OR Rico Walker

LT: 1. Andre Roye, Jr., 2. Ja'Kavion Nonar OR Tommy Varhall

LG: 1. Mason Lunsford, 2. Khristopher Love

C: 1. Coltin Deery, 2. Aric Harris

RG: 1. Delmar Glaze, 2. Marcus Finger

RT: 1. Marcus Dumervil, 2. Keon Kindred OR Maximus McCree

DEFENSE

DE: 1. Quashon Fuller, 2. Dillan Fontus OR Christian Teague

NT: 1. Anthony Booker, Jr. OR Henry Chibueze

DT: 1. Tommy Akingbesote OR Jordan Phillips

SAM: 1. Kellan Wyatt, 2. Dylan Gooden OR DJ Samuels

MIKE: 1. Jaishawn Barham, 2. Andrew Booker

WILL: 1. Ruben Hyppolite II, 2. Caleb Wheatland

JACK: 1. Riyad Wilmot, 2. Neeo Avery OR Donnell Brown

CB: 1. Ja'Quan Sheppard, 2. Corey Coley, Jr.

CB: 1. Tarheeb Still, 2. Gavin Gibson OR Lionell Whitaker

FS: 1. Dante Trader, Jr., 2. Avantae Williams

SS: 1. Beau Brade, 2. Glendon Miller OR Shane Mosley

*Note: With the addition of Williams, I'd expect more "big nickel" packages in 2023 with two cornerbacks and three safeties. I'm also assuming that Gibson moves from safety to cornerback, a move that Mosley could also make.

SPECIAL TEAMS

K: 1. Roman Levant, 2. Harrison Beattie

LS: 1. Ethan Gough, 2. Jake Foggia

KR: 1. Octavian Smith, Jr., 2. Tai Felton

I just saw Jordan Burch an edge, from South Carolina has entered the transfer portal.

Let's piss Gamecock nation off a little more.

Safeties coach Wes Neighbors has taken another job as the safeties coach at Ole Miss. He's the second assistant coach to leave the staff so far this offseason, joining co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Mike Miller.

Have to think Taulia knew that before he decided to return. Would be a nice time to still have a guy like Mike Miller on your staff, but it is what it is. It’ll definitely be an interesting hire, and Locksley’s third offensive coordinator.

Hire Brandon Streeter and complete the Arkansas —> TCU —> Clemson —> Maryland circle.

(j/k, do not want Streeter. Just pointing out the ripple effect that Dabo firing him has had)

Rob Ambrose makes sense - he and Mike Locksley are friends; he can run Lox's offense, he just had Pigrome as QB and he did well with him.  He also would fit in UMD's budget.  Rob Ambrose will be a good fit as UMD's OC.

Not that it would come as much surprise, but Enos' contract at Arkansas is reportedly a significant raise for him. His three-year deal at Maryland was worth approximately $2.3 million, but he'll be making closer to $3.5 million over the next three years with the Razorbacks.

Josh Gattis is back on the market after being let go by Miami, so Locksley could always take another swing at landing him.

But despite being a year removed from winning the Broyles award, the whispers are that he is way overhyped and not all that. Michigan didn't seem to miss him that badly last season.
