Rough first inning for Voth.

Orioles down 3-0.

Stanton hit one to New Jersey.

8-0 in the 9th.

The Orioles for those who are not watch (most of us) have 1 hit.

Starting today I bet Judge to homer. Will do so every day until the regular season ends. Naturally, he’ll finish the season stuck on 61.

Yankees fans booing every time Judge received a pitched ball, and their (apparently) obscene chant after his last walk have me somewhat wishing Hyde repaid that unsportsmanlike conduct by intentionally walking #99 every Sunday at bat.

Let him break the record against another team, and hopefully on the road.

F the Yankees. Pitch around the guy all day tomorrow. I actually like Judge but that franchise and coach can suck it.

I don’t get it. The record is 73.

AL record is Roger Maris with 61 in 1961.

MLB record is 73, but for many of us, it comes with an asterisk.

The only way 62 is meaningful is because it’s the Yankee record and that’s it’s just an incredible season in general. “AL record” when everyone plays everyone and now there is a universal DH is code for MLB trying to pretend they didn’t invite the steroid era themselves and then try to disown it when they got caught.

I don't remember, were there constant live look ins and cutaways from college football when McGwire was chasing Hack Wilson's historic NL record? I think the AL record part is overblown.

The second part, while ignoring greenies, has been rehashed over and over and over again and probably doesn't need to be discussed still further here. But if the Yankees want to asterisk 73 maybe they should also put an asterisk by their rings earned while being led by PED users like Clemens and ARod and Pettitte.

It is an incredible season. Is he still in the running for the Triple Crown? The only problem I have with the rest of your post is that there are still two Cy Young, MVP and etc. awards each year. Despite all the interleague games and the DH, the records remain separate as well as comparable.

As to MLB bringing the steroid era on themselves, I absolutely agree.

It is definitely over blown, probably in part because it's the damn Yankees, and in part because (I think) no one has hit more than 54 HRs since the steroid era.

I don’t get it. The record is 73.

I don't get it either.

I don't think we are in a "non steroid" era either. The masking agents are most likely so much better now than they were 20 years years ago.

I will say that in an 8-0 game I think I'd challenge Judge if I was pitching. I woukd only pitch around him if the game was close and he could actually beat me. That said, if the Orioles don't want to give up # 62, so be it

Awards are different than records. How often do they talk about the AL RBI record holder? Its a big deal, I just think its being played up significantly by the mainstream media and MLB themselves. Like it or not, six players (edit: three players, six times) have hit more than 61 homers. It happened.

Probably the only reason Judge's pursuit of Roger Maris is being referred to as "American League" is due to the fact that baseball doesn't want to come right out and say "legitimate record." That's the advantage of being defined by two separate leagues that essentially acted autonomously for over a century.

Regardless of how Judge's season is ultimately, well, judged, his historic season compares more to Ruth's in that he's doing it in a year when homeruns are down across the board. The Babe outhomered 12 teams by himself in 1927; indeed, his closest competition came from the guy who batted directly behind him for nearly 10 years. Lou Gehrig finished that year with 47 homers; fellow Yankee Tony Lazzeri was third with 18.

Judge's closest competitor is the Phillies' Kyle Schwarber, who I believe stands at 42 (with a paltry .210 BA). His pursuit of the Triple Crown has almost become a sidebar. I think that shows how much weight the number "61" still carries in baseball.
