AL record is Roger Maris with 61 in 1961.

MLB record is 73, but for many of us, it comes with an asterisk.

I don't remember, were there constant live look ins and cutaways from college football when McGwire was chasing Hack Wilson's historic NL record? I think the AL record part is overblown.

The second part, while ignoring greenies, has been rehashed over and over and over again and probably doesn't need to be discussed still further here. But if the Yankees want to asterisk 73 maybe they should also put an asterisk by their rings earned while being led by PED users like Clemens and ARod and Pettitte.

The only way 62 is meaningful is because it’s the Yankee record and that’s it’s just an incredible season in general. “AL record” when everyone plays everyone and now there is a universal DH is code for MLB trying to pretend they didn’t invite the steroid era themselves and then try to disown it when they got caught.

It is an incredible season. Is he still in the running for the Triple Crown? The only problem I have with the rest of your post is that there are still two Cy Young, MVP and etc. awards each year. Despite all the interleague games and the DH, the records remain separate as well as comparable.

Probably the only reason Judge's pursuit of Roger Maris is being referred to as "American League" is due to the fact that baseball doesn't want to come right out and say "legitimate record." That's the advantage of being defined by two separate leagues that essentially acted autonomously for over a century.

Regardless of how Judge's season is ultimately, well, judged, his historic season compares more to Ruth's in that he's doing it in a year when homeruns are down across the board. The Babe outhomered 12 teams by himself in 1927; indeed, his closest competition came from the guy who batted directly behind him for nearly 10 years. Lou Gehrig finished that year with 47 homers; fellow Yankee Tony Lazzeri was third with 18.

Judge's closest competitor is the Phillies' Kyle Schwarber, who I believe stands at 42 (with a paltry .210 BA). His pursuit of the Triple Crown has almost become a sidebar. I think that shows how much weight the number "61" still carries in baseball.
