McLanahan has not pitched since the AS game, so maybe we can do some damage early.

Watkins is on 13 days rest, so that may be a problem too.

Definitely not a good pitching matchup but this team keeps finding ways to surprise us. Maybe we can keep it close and win late against the bullpen.

Why call up Vavra today with a nasty lefty on the mound and then have him sit?  I guess I understand the idea of letting a guy see their first game from the bench and get acclimated, but they don't typically do that with guys that are going to play.

Or is he only getting the call because Arauz got hurt?  Is he going to be behind Odor most of the time?

McClanahan is nasty. It's really unreal how Tampa Bay always finds these guys.

Hoping its just because its a lefty on the mound. Odor has been playing a lot vs lefties anyway and had better splits vs LHP than RHP.

Vavra's got big platoon splits, so protecting him versus lefties at least as first makes a lot of sense.

955/695 this year

950/500 in 2021 (only 45 PA v LHP)

955/700 in 2019

800/1000 in 2018

Hope that's it. He better not play once every two weeks like Arauz.

Think he deserves a chance to not be platooned and I suspect he will get that chance. Hopefully, sooner rather than later.

I dont think thats it the more I consider everything. They would just call up Martin if that were the case.

Someone on twitter also pointed out that he may not even be there yet depending on when they knew Arauz was going on the IL, the Tides were in Memphis. Tough to face McClanahan in your MLB debut with no normal pregame, if that's the case.

Still, he seemingly was only called up because Arauz went on the IL.

No complaints if that accelerated the timeline, but big complaints if they call him up and then have him sit behind Odor.

This is true, but I feel like a few weeks back Elias talked about him in the same breath as Gunnar, Westburg, and Hall, so it really doesn't seem like they're prepared to just give him the McKenna treatment. I guess we'll see though, Urias is red hot so I want him to keep playing, and it's clear they love Odor's clubhouse presence, hopefully Odor can be a good presence on the bench. There's no reason to bring him up just to sit, either play him or bring up Martin instead.

I am okay with not playing him against McLanahan.  Vavra also plays OF, so he can be used there too.
