Maybe this is something we could have discussed before this forum, not sure, but now we definitely can so...

I teach post Civil War U.S. History at a high school here in Baltimore so obviously people's perspectives on our history is interesting to me.

Anyway, I'm currently teaching the Vietnam War so I'm curious to hear any thoughts on that controversial war.

So this is your chance to potentially influence me as to how I teach my students. ;)

Either way, this is a fascinating topic to me and I'm interested in hearing opinions on it.

The Vietnam War is what caused the Great Society to never get a fair shot... there were other sins about Vietnam, of course... but that's the one that continues to bite American Society every day in many ways... what little of the Great Society there was, it was way more beneficial than most folks realize because of the revisionist history the Reaganites and Fox News have conned people into believing... but Vietnam cut off the Great Society's supply chain before it had a real chance...

What's especially sad is that LBJ *knew* Vietnam was a mistake when he did it... all his advisors were gung-ho, but he wasn't... the only reason he did it was to save the Great Society from the death it would face if he lost Vietnam to the Commies and therefore lost the White House and Congress to the Rep's... but Vietnam caused the Great Society to be mortally wounded anyway... it was a true American tragedy...

The CNN Presents The 60's, 70's, 80's Series have been well done.

As one would expect, Vietnam had a long segment.    Series available on-demand.
