Nice to see a positive outing today. It was a bad team with mostly backup players and it sounded like a huge strike zone from a rookie ump, but hey, I'll take it. Something to build on hopefully

He should have a minimum of 2 starts and probably should have 3 or 4 in the minors.

I know whats going on in the rotation could influence that...but it shouldn't.

If he's physically ready, I don't see a need for an extended rehab stint for Gallardo.  One or two to get back into the groove and stretched out, but if he can go 100 pitches or 5+ innings after the 2nd, then I think he's ready to be back in the rotation.

I'm pessimistic as hell about him being an asset when we get him back, but the team obviously is going to give him an opportunity.  I just don't see what there is for him to prove in four rehab starts that he couldn't prove two.  They aren't going to leave him rehabbing in Bowie until he has a couple good ones in a row.

If he is throwing that many pitches in his second start and the velocity is good that would be fine.

Not sure 100 pitches after 2 starts is realistic though.  I join you in the pessimism.  He just looked like crap when he pitched.  His control and breaking stuff is just not good enough to sustain an 87 mph fastball.  If he shows 91 then things might be different.

A lot of wasted money in the rotation.  13.5 for Jiminez and 11.5 for Gallardo.  Good thing our GM is so damn smart.

MASN: http://www.masnsport...p-12-7-win.html

Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed that Yovani Gallardo will make a second rehab start after going three innings today at Single-A Frederick. Gallardo will pitch Tuesday at an undetermined affiliate.

Showalter said the reports on Gallardo from special assignment pitching instructor Ramon Martinez were favorable despite the three runs and seven hits. He referenced the “porous” infield defense at Frederick that contributed to at least three hits.

“(Martinez) said he probably should have had three or four shutout innings,” Showalter said.

Sure, it's the Frederick infielders' fault.

An extra few MPH sounds promising.

Gallardo sat 89-90 mph and topped out at 91 today at Norfolk. And he is indeed done. Ashur Tolliver takes over. #Orioles

Doesn't sound very encouraging.

No, I think in order for him to be successful, his command needs to be a lot sharper than what we saw and his velocity needs to sit around 90-92.

Yeah, that'd certainly be better.  Agree about the command also.

If true, it's a nice step up from earlier in the year.  Wouldn't go so far as to say he can be successful if he sits at 89-90 with the fastball, but I am quite confident that he cannot be successful sitting at 86-87 like he was before the injury this season.  There would at least be a little more reason for optimism if the velocity bounces back a bit.

Agree, but I also agree with Mike B's comment about his command not looking particularly impressive. All we can do is hope for the best I guess.

As per Roch Kubatko...

ovani Gallardo’s next stop should be in Baltimore.

Gallardo made his third and final injury rehab start tonight, allowing only a leadoff home run over five innings with Triple-A Norfolk. He held Charlotte to one hit, walked two and struck out five.

Carlos Sanchez homered on the seventh pitch from Gallardo after falling behind 0-2 on called strikes, according to the MiLB.com boxscore.

Gallardo was removed after 90 pitches, including 52 strikes. Left-hander Zach Phillips replaced him with the game tied 1-1.

Manager Buck Showalter told reporters that Gallardo could make his next start Saturday afternoon against the Blue Jays at Camden Yards. Nothing that happened tonight should alter those plans.

Sad state of affairs when I'm this excited, if that's the right word, to "upgrade" from Jimenez to Gallardo in the rotation.
