I know this has been announced in the trade deadline thread, but I thought it deserved a thread all its own.

Hope we didn't give up much...

Pretty uninspiring, but it should at least be a slight upgrade. IIRC, he loves hitting at OPACY... Unfortunately, he won't be facing our pitchers. I just hope we didn't give anything up.

Rosenthal and Heyman are saying 2011 draftee Kyle Simon is one of the players going to Philly.

Ken Rosenthal ‏:

Source: #Orioles RHP Kyle Simon, fourth rounder in 2011, traded to #Phillies, presumably as part of Thome deal.

I hope that is all. It is still too much. This team should not be a buyer.

Well I hear Linda Ronstadt is looking for a guitar player.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal
#Phillies also getting minor-league catcher Gabriel Lino along with Simon. New #Phillies farm director Joe Jordan drafted Simon for #Orioles

Why not? This team needs to take advantage of the position in the standings that they are in and do everything they can to stay there.

The Thome deal is very similar to when the Orioles acquired another veteran bat in 1997 - Harold Baines.

No it's not. That 1997 team was full of Vets at the end of their run. This team is on the way up and shouldn't be trading guys like Simon & Lino for someone worth MAYBE 1/2 a win over the rest of the season.

Lino is replaceable.

Trea, just don't.

Awful trade.

The question you should be asking is "is Thome going to help you out more at DH than a combo of Betemit/Johnson/Reynolds?"

Personally, I don't think so.

We'll see how Thome does before we call it that. This is all about getting this team to the playoffs for the first time in 14 years.

Could be a precursor to another deal. As you mentioned Orioles will have Reynolds, Betemit, Davis, Johnson and Thome to play 1B/DH.

Guess what...this is what contending teams do.

They go out and get players better than what they currently have to try to win a championship.

You have to give up value to get value.

Thome isn't Jim Thome of 2005, but he's still better than what the Orioles currently have at DH.

Great to see DD and the O's organization being aggressive for once.

I like it.

Palmer doesn't seem too thrilled about this judging from their reaction.

There's just no reason to give up 2 good minor leaguers with upside for a half year rental of Thome. It isn't a position of need.

If this was for 2000 Jim Thome, fine. But this is 2012 Jim Thome.

In fairness, I read that Lino has high upside but he's extremely unlikely to reach it.

Of course, now that he's been traded from the O's, I have no doubt he will.

Last time I checked they had the 2nd wildcard berth...

Yuck. Legit RP and C prospects for a 40+ year old DH for half a season. I don't mind trading for Thome but that's way too much to give up.

Is Thome really better than what we currently have at DH?

I honestly do not think so.
