Thought we discussed this before, but couldn't find it.

The FIBA Americas tournament is in Mexico in late August and early September. The Top 2 teams there qualify for the Olympics, with the US and Brazil already qualified.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Team Canada:

1 Tyler Ennis, Cory Joseph, Kevin Pangos

2 Nick Stauskas

3 Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett

4 Tristan Thompson, Trey Lyles, Kyle Wiltjer

5 Kelly Olynyk, Robert Sacre

Would look better if Anthony Bennett came on... he could be the 3, with Wiggins at the 2.

Still, that's a pretty good roster. Capable of a medal.

Americas championship on NBA Network right now... Canada playing Uruguay...  (currently up big... believe if they finish off tonight, they are in good shape to reach the semi-finals)

Canada opened the tourney with a loss to Argentina, but has been on a run since...

The Top 2 teams in this tourney qualify for the Olympics...

Tomorrow they face host Mexico, and Tuesday they face the Dominican Republic.

This is their current roster...

  • Anthony Bennett, 6-8" forward, Brampton, Ont., Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA)
  • Aaron Doornekamp, 6-7" forward, Odessa, Ont., Braunschweig (Germany)
  • Melvin Ejim, 6-6" forward, Toronto, Orlando Magic (NBA)
  • Brady Heslip, 6-2" guard, Burlington, Ont., Pallacanestro Cantù (Italy)
  • Cory Joseph, 6-3" guard, Pickering, Ont., Toronto Raptors (NBA)
  • Andrew Nicholson, 6-9" forward, Mississauga, Ont., Orlando Magic (NBA)
  • Kelly Olynyk, 7-0" centre, Kamloops, B.C., Boston Celtics (NBA)
  • Dwight Powell, 6-9" forward, Toronto, Dallas Mavericks (NBA)
  • Robert Sacre, 7-0" centre, Vancouver, Los Angeles Lakers (NBA)
  • Phil Scrubb, 6-3" guard, Richmond, B.C., AEK Athens (Greece)
  • Nik Stauskas, 6-6" guard, Mississauga, Ont., Philadelphia 76ers (NBA)
  • Andrew Wiggins, 6-8" forward, Vaughan, Ont., Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA)

Brady Heslip  has been dropping baskets...

Australia is qualified, and they should be pretty good...

1) Dellavedova, Dante Exum

2) Patty Mills, Kevin Lisch

3) Ben Simmons, Joe Ingles

4) Thon Maker, Cameron Bairstow

5) Bogut, Aron Baynes

Maker (20th on the ESPN big board) wants to play for Australia... the Australian HC not sure if he will make the team.

Wiggins won't participate in helping Canada trying to qualify, or go to the Olympics if Canada makes it.  Disappointing for them. If Canada qualifies for Olympic play, would have been that much more interesting with Wiggins on the roster.

With Spain missing Ibaka, and M. Gasol, Canada not qualifying, and Simmons not participating with Australia...  not real excited for this.

Late 4th in the exhibition vs. Argentina...  US just laying it on.  (Final 111-74.)

Argentina will have a chance to medal, but this isn't one of their best teams.

France and Australia have the 2nd and 3rd best teams I think.    Still not clear if Bogut will be able to play for Australia. They would have been a lot of fun to watch with Simmons, Exum, and Maker.

France not taking Evan Fournier (who wanted to play) is crazy to me.
They could have had a starting lineup of Parker, Fournier, Batum, Diaw, and Gobert...

They do still have Nando de Colo the 2016 Euroleague MVP available as their 2G though.
