With the 37th overall pick in the '18 Draft, the O's take Oregon State SS Cadyn Grenier.

MLB.com had him as their 68th overall prospect.

For future comparison sake, when the O's selected, MLB.com's top available players were:

19th overall: Cole Wilcox, RHP, HS
23rd: Kumar Rocker, RHP, HS
28th: Xavier Edwards, SS, HS
29th: Jeremy Eierman, SS, College
30th: Steele Walker, OF, College

Oregon State's Cadyn Grenier is named the 2018 Pac-12 Baseball Defender of the Year. The junior shortstop committed just six errors, while turning 22 double plays en route to a .970 fielding percentage this season.

2080 Baseball: Scouting Report

https://2080baseball.../cadyn-grenier/

Cadyn Grenier, SS/2B, Oregon State Univ.
Ht/Wt: 5’10”/185             B/T: R/R                  Age (as of 2018 MLB Draft): 21y, 7m
Video | Video 2

Nick Madrigal’s double play partner at Oregon State, Grenier is a fundamentally sound defender who reads the ball well off the bat and delivers strong, accurate throws across the diamond with an above-average arm. While his glove is ahead of his bat, Grenier has shown marked improvement with the bat year-over-year, slashing .335/.420/.483 as the Beavers enter post-season play.

I kind of hate this pick.

Sounds like a guy that will be a MI UTI player.

Won’t hit enough to be a starter.

There was higher upside and better talent there it seems.

Ah yes, the annual outrage over guys we've never heard of.

Any statement that starts off with 'sounds like' is a complete waste of time.

Oregon State advanced to the Super Regionals this weekend, and will be favored to get to the College World Series. Will definitely check him out.

Here's what I know about these "guys we've never heard of:"

Two picks, both times we took guys who were rated way behind where we took them while players with much higher rankings were on the board.

So yes, there is outrage.

Cadyn Grenier, Oregon State

Baseball America Scouting Report: Perhaps the best defensive shortstop in the class, Grenier took sole ownership of the position in 2017 with Oregon State after switching back and forth between shortstop and second base with Nick Madrigal. Grenier has no plus tools to speak of and is around average across the board, but he does more than enough to stick at shortstop with fantastic instincts, an above-average arm, solid-average range and some of the surest hands in college baseball. There are players who are flashier than Grenier, but no one makes the routine play with his consistency, as Grenier has a way of slowing the game down. Grenier could be a second- or third-round pick on his defensive strengths alone, but he has shown improvements in his offensive game this spring as well. After hitting sub-.300 during his first two seasons with the Beavers, Grenier hit .325/.418/.470 through his first 42 games this spring. While his strikeout and walk rates haven’t changed much, Northwest-area scouts have noticed an increase in quality at-bats and have seen him work the counts more effectively and consistently. Grenier will never have the natural hitting ability of his double-play partner Madrigal, and he has more of a manufactured swing that will likely need to be regularly adjusted and tweaked as he progresses through pro baseball. There’s no real wood bat track record with Grenier either, as he hit .190/.312/.276 in the Cape Cod League in 2016 and .158/.333/.283 with USA Baseball’s College National Team last summer.

Luckily, we also get to waste our time reading a post like this every year too! See, we all win!

Since he's a college guy, and there doesn't seem to be any doubt about his glove... could see him move very quickly, as long as he is competitive with the bat.

Has to be able to hit. Start him in Delmarva or even Frederick. Test him immediately.

The glove seems obvious. He has to be at least a 650 OPS bat if he plays elite defense.

If the defense is merely very good, need that OPS to be more like 700.

Brian Sakowski (from perfect game)

37. Orioles: Cadyn Grenier, ss, Oregon State. Impactful defender up the middle, sticks at SS long term, solid hitting tools that should develop well

I was kind of expecting Griffin Conine at this spot.

I like that he has a good glove. Probably makes him a likely MLer at some point.

But I would like to see more upside. Let’s hope the improvements with the bat that he has shown can continue.

Chris Davis begs to differ.

Agree with this.  Nothing against the guy.  It's done so I hope he is awesome, but this seems so wrong.

Dansby Swanson light maybe. Sounds like it's all gonna come down to how well he develops as a hitter.

Grenier is the reason Madrigal was moved from SS to 2B. That's pretty cool.
