Do you tip generously?

If you've worked in a job dependent on tips... your experiences?

I used to work at the Ruby Tuesdays in Owings Mills.

I believe that I do tip well...I won't say generously, but I start at "15% + round up to the next dollar" (ex: A meal is $25 all told and 15% would be $3.75. I would tip $4.00 to make it an even $29), and go up/down depending on service and other circumstances.

I generally tip around 20%, and being single, I won't tip below $5... which typically greatly inflates my %. I know that isn't wise, but I have a soft spot for wait staff making less than minimum wage. I worked at Pizza-Hut for a year or so before I got into the Financial Services Industry. Met a lot of good people, but damn those geezers coming in for lunch getting their $5.99 lunch special and leaving you a precise 15% tip of .89 cents for my great service just got old. Anyone who finds themselves dependent on tips as a career, hopefully works at a place with high ticket prices.

What I don't get the point of is tipping for carry out, which seems to be all the rage these days. Or for all the other various tip jars you see. Starbucks for instance. Really? I'm not tipping AFTER I pay $5.00 for my beverage that cost you .04 cents to make. Eff off.

I'm the same way.  Service has to be really bad for me to tip 15%.   At an average place I tip 20-25%.  At a higher end place, a little more.

20% for the most part unless service is shitty.

In Spain it was awesome. 5-10% and that was only for amazing service. Otherwise, round up your bill to the next clean number. So if the bill was $11.20, you just make it $12. If it was like $12.85 or something I'd just leave a Euro.

We for some reason overtip in the states and it doesn't really make sense.

When I was in Cardiff for work years ago, we had a training class made up members from across Europe. They all made the point to us that tipping was basically unheard of, and pretty much considered rude.

It's because they value the service industry there and pay them good salaries. Here, we pay them a couple bucks an hour and expect the customer to largely subsidize their paycheck.

How much would you tip for a $100 massage? (Not the kind you get, Pedro)

At restaurants yes.  20% min unless something is really off.

I don't get delivery often, but I'm less generous there.  Especially if there is a service charge for delivery.

I don't tip on Uber rides, used to tip fairly well on cab rides but don't take cabs much any more.

I tip a few bucks when I get haircuts, nothing crazy.

Can't think of many other places I go or services I use where I would be expected to tip.

Oh...I will NEVER tip a bathroom attendant.  Go away, creep.  I can squeeze out my own damn soap.

I guess learned/followed from my parents/family to pretty much always tip 20%. I'd only give 15 or so if you realllly mess up. I guess that's my family's restaurant influence on me, just because I know how bad some customers can tip. I pretty much always round up to the nearest dollar too.

However, I don't tip for carry-out. Doesn't make sense to me. I rarely get food delivered but I'd probably give a guy a few bucks.

Newest tip fad I've seen was at the airport. The Southwest bag checkers were practically begging for it. WTF is that?

I was just reading an article about tipping levels.  According to this chart, I've been undertipping car valets and hotel bellmen (although I almost never use them).

I tip extremely generously.  I know my life is good, and I haven't had to do much to earn it, so I pay it back.  Bahamas includes 15% as part of the bill and I always give another 10%.

I tip well but if you give me shitty service, I do tend to tip a little less.

Generally speaking, if I get shit service, I complain and get something taken off the check and then I end up tipping them normal.

I tip well.  The extra dollar or so means more to them than it does me.

I round up the bill and then tip 20% of that.

I never give less than 20%.  I eat at the same places all the time and usually have the same waitresses.  Can not risk pissing off the people who deliver my food.

I used to work with a guy  who tipped 2 bucks if  the service was okay and $3 if they were good.He would always volunteer to leave the tip.  We put an end to that real quick.  Not a good idea to having some one spitting in your meal.
