What conference will Utah be playing?

Really nice article!  The Utes don't currently have a conference but may play in the ACC or Southeastern Conference (where AFA plays). Apparently they are also looking at the Big Ten.

You mean the SoCon? Pretty sure the SEC doesn't do lacrosse. Odd as it sounds, the Big East might make a lot of sense for Utah, just because it pairs them with Denver.

Yes just a typo. The Southern Conference. And the Big East is also on their radar. There is no real good fit since they are sort of out there on an island (and who the hell wants to go to Utah.....lol). But its pretty cool that lacrosse has made it to the intermountain west. Our local junior high schools here in Idaho Falls even have club teams.

There are high schools here in the Portland area that have lacrosse. I see younger kids carrying sticks around a lot. Perhaps in the not-too-distant future the Pac-12 will be a lacrosse conference (the University of Oregon already has a women's team). Obviously it isn't just about having enough good players from your region....there are money constraints to adding sports, especially with Title IX considerations.

Yes Title IX really messed things up. I am all for equal sports. But I think a more reasonable approach would have been to say that you must have an equal number of sports for Men and Women for sports that do not garner more income than it takes to run them.

So if a school actually has a net income for say football then that sport would not get counted in the equal equation. Typically that would mean that football and basketball wouldn't count (and maybe for some schools in the SE maybe baseball?).

I agree, Steve. The sports that generate positive revenues should be exempt from Title IX. I know there are a handful of schools that have a program that generates "profits" that aren't either football or MBB. I recall that baseball at Texas was one. On the women's side, I think UConn's basketball program made money some years. But the exceptions are few and far between, and I imagine that the margins are low enough that they can vary year-over-year.
