IF Joey and Smith can platoon in RF and Kim can handle playing everyday in LF the O's will be improved in OBP. Still going to be weak in defense but perhaps and uptick over last year with Trumbo playing RF so much. So there is reason to be optimistic.  A lot of IFs for sure but we can hope.

He's been a really nice player for us so far. Has quality AB's consistently, and is producing.

He's a really good hitter.

Barring injury, he should never be out of the lineup vs righties. If that means Trumbo sits, so be it.

I got curious, so looked up his numbers today...

Yovani Gallardo is 1-3 with a 4.46 ERA in 6 starts covering 34.1 IP so far for the Mariners.  38 H, 2 HR, 12 BB, 26 K.  3.30 FIP, 4.05 xFIP, 87 ERA+.

Last year he threw 34% SL (avg 86.5 MPH), 25% FA (90.3 MPH) and 20% FT (89.9 MPH).  I think all 3 of those are basically the same pitch just when he is able to get more action on it.  This year, he's throwing 25% SL (89.2 MPH), 23% FA (92.1 MPH), and 27% FT (91.7 MPH).  Don't know if he's genuinely throwing faster or if it's mostly due to the new method for measuring velocity, but his velocity numbers are up about 2 MPH across the board for all of those three "different" pitches.  And that's up not just compared to overall 2016 numbers but up compared to only his numbers once he returned from the DL and had a bit more life in his arm.

I still make the trade again without hesitation, even knowing with hindsight that Gallardo hasn't been terrible and that we had no other options at the back of the rotation and were looking at a Tillman injury.  Smith is a real nice pickup and getting rid of Yovani was addition by subtraction, IMO.
