Ferrari 275 GTB

GT means "Gran Turismo" = grand touring = room for 2, plus their luggage for a weekend...

GTB means "GT Berlinetta" = coupe...

GTS means "GT Spider" = convertible...

The Jag XK150 might have been a better car than the E-Type... but regardless of that, it had the world's best car badge on it's trunk lid...

$1.96M, and they already sold out? Don't they know these things depreciate the second you drive off the lot. Get it at Carmax for $1.2M a month from now.

Damn... I just realized the Goodwood Festival of Speed has been happening without me!

If you never heard of it, well, it's like JazzFest for car people...

800px-Mazda_central_display_Goodwood_201

It's also a perfect example of how England is lucky to have titled aristocrats who do crazy things.    Every year, Lord March pretty much turns his estate into a race track, plus amenities for guests... of which there are more than 100,000...

I think today is the last day... you can stream it live....https://www.goodwood.com/grrc/

The Goodwood Revival is similar but different... it's in Sept... it's about the Good Old Days, and everybody dresses in period dress... Lord March picks the period... sometimes it's WW2 with Spitfires flying over... sometimes it's the 60's with famous bands on stage... just whatever he feels like...

goodwood-revival-2009-minis-girls.jpg

Regardless of the era, there's always lots of exceptional cars, exceptional race cars, and exceptional old airplanes...

I've seen clips of the hill climb at Goodwood. It's tricky, and pretty cool. That chicane is nasty.

Here's I think an F1 car that set the record in the climb. So narrow, blind turns.

^^^^^^

The car Nick Heidfeld did that in was the 1998 McLaren F1 car... Mika Hakkinen (Finn) won the 1st of his 2 World Drivers Championships in that car... and McLaren won the World Constructors' Championship with that car due to the combined performance of Mika and David Coulthard (Scot)....

It was designed by Adrian Newey, who is a true wizard at race car design... whoever he works for wins championships... Sebastian Vettel (now at Ferrari) recently had a string of 4 consecutive World Championships at Red Bull, and it's no coincidence that Newey was the Red Bull designer... it's mainly about aero and downforce, and they have all manner of simulation software to help designers deal with that... it's called "computational fluid dynamics", which lets them model the air flowing over and under the car like a fluid... but Newey doesn't use that... what he does is just draw on paper with a dang pencil... which is incredible, but it's true....

David Coulthard is the guy with the Scot's accent who you will often hear giving the pre-race overview of F1 race tracks... I know it was his voice on the vid I posted in which he describes the hot lap of the Montreal track that's on the island in the river... and maybe others too, I forget...

late-60's - early 70's Lamborghini Miura

Mr. Lamborghini was unhappy with a Ferrari he bought from Enzo... he decided he could do better... so, he produced the original mid-engined supercar... the occupants have a transverse V12 right behind them...

I'm guessing most folks won't appreciate this... but for those who might...

A Jaguar C-type is the racing version of the XK-120...

The XK-120 caused a sensation when it came out in 1950...

jaguar_xk_1949_wallpapers_1.jpg

jaguar-xk120--04.jpg

The C-type is a lighter, slightly more powerful version of the XK-120 (it's basically the same car).. designed for Le Mans... where it won in 1951 and again in 1953...

jaguar-c-type-bought-for-900-is-estimate

Now, your basic C-type sells for well into 7 figures...  I saw one auctioned off for $2.4M, but that was several years ago...

Juan Manuel Fangio was perhaps the greatest F1 driver of all time... he won 5 World Championships... with different manufacturers, so it wasn't just the car... he was so good that Stirling Moss was the 2nd-string driver when they both drove for Mercedes... so, while any C-type is worth a fortune, the C-type that belonged to Fangio is worth God-knows how much...

Given all that... here is some guy who has the balls to race Fangio's personal C-type in a hillclimb race in the Italian Alps... sliding around on the side of a mountain in the dang rain...  if you watch closely, you can see more-than-several times when he almost lost it...

Competing against more modern old cars, he finished 2nd...

Is that a Ferrari?

Not sure, but I think it's the "is it real or not?"  Porsche 960...

It's been rumored for several years as Porsche's answer to the Ferrari 458, shown below...

About car numbers...

Ever since the 911 & 912 replaced the 356 in the mid-60's, Porsches are always 3 digits, beginning with a 9... nobody's sure if there's significance other than whatever number the design studio attached to them...

Ferrari numbers for its road cars traditionally referred to the displacement of 1 cylinder... back when they were mostly V12's, you'd multiply it by 12... so, the 250 GTO had a 3.0 liter engine... since Enzo died, they do it differently now, but I'm not sure exactly how... the 1st 2 digits are the engine displacement (360 = 3.6 liter), not sure what the 3rd digit is... the number system for racing cars is different... the 1st 2 digits are the displacement, the 3rd digit is the number of cylinders... so the 458 is a 4.5 liter 8-cylinder engine....

If Porsche really makes the 960, it will be because they wanna kick Ferrari's ass at Le Mans... where the GTE-AM class is chock full of Ferrari 458's... they beat the 911 RSR's, and Porsche doesn't like that...

OK, that was my guess... do you know if they're actually making it?
