The greatest hip-hop album ever turned 20 this week.  And 20 never sounded so good.

 

Check this album out if you haven't yet.  You won't regret it.

It's probably the 7th or so best song on the album.

 

It's definitely not better than "Machine Gun Funk" "Warning" "One More Chance" "The What" "Big Poppa" or "Everyday Struggle"

Great album. Listened to it non-stop for probably three weeks on the bus to and from high school. I hope Grantland does a roundtable on it as part of their "1994" review.

 

There have been better, more influential albums. Hell, this may not even be the best album of 94 -- but I think beats and lyrics came together for this in a special way.

 

BTW, I say this thinking Life After Death was pretty terrible from a production stand point.

Well sure, but strictly from a hip-hop perspective, this is as good as it gets.

It's not as influential as some of the 80s stuff like "Straight Outta Compton" or "It Takes a Nation of Millions...", but this is the best, bar none.

Great album.   I remember how "The What" was one of many examples of how Method Man's compilations on other rappers' albums were so much better than his own albums.

Well sure, but strictly from a hip-hop perspective, this is as good as it gets.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx was better and more influential. Way more. In fact, Life After Death doesn't exist without OB4CL.

 

Bizzare Ride II the Pharcyde is a better, more fun album.

 

But Ready to Die is an amazing watermark for rap. One of the best albums of rap, hands down.

I was definitely thinking about that album when I made the comment.

 

I think if it had 2, maybe 3 extra tracks on the level of what was already on the album it would be hands down better. It also lacked the big singles that RTD had.

But the king stays the king, and since 1994, nobody has taken Biggie's posthumous crown off his head.

It's been a very long time since I listened to LAD -- almost threw it away after my first listen -- but the materialistic, Cristal, let's come up with AKA names, stuff that riddled that album, and Junior Mafia albums, all came into prominence with OB4CL.

 

I love LS but OB4CL is the correct answer here. Everyone knows this.

Back to the topic at hand, "Unbelievable" is perhaps the best track, and definitely the best produced song on the album. Quintessential DJ Premier.
