It may be a fielders choice but it never went to a base. It went to the cutoff. And you just said above its the official scorers decision whether to award an RBI. That's the main point. A point you tried to argue wasn't possible in MLB

If the throw didn't go to another base, but instead properly went to the cutoff man, then the OS should be charged with an E   ;-)

Ok. If the fielder is just an idiot and stands there it's an error. If the fielder freezes for some reason it's an error.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

If the fielder touches the ball but fails to execute what should have been an out, it's an E...

BTW, IMO all this stuff about E's negating RBI's, hits, etc., is BS... I think they should lose it... it causes more fairness problems than it solves...

In the scenario for Mr Davis's post it's probably a FC scorers decision as I noted. Did the beer league fielder hold onto the ball or throw to the wrong base. If so it's your decision whether the runner kept going (RBI) or stopped and took advantage of the misplay.(No RBI)

If the throw didn't go to another base, but instead properly went to the cutoff man, then the OS should be charged with an E

I just watched it again... Pearce did not make a proper throw to the cutoff man... he bobbled the ball for a sec but recovered in time... but then he lollygagged a soft toss to Hardy... the OS was kind to Pearce for ruling that as a throw to the wrong place (FC) instead of ringing him up for an E... although the issue was the throw to near 2B, so it's in keeping with a wrong-base FC...

And I see Mr Shackleford has edited his posts above. Before something had to be recorded officially. Now he says there is a scenario where it's an OS decision. There are scenarios where the official scorer has discretion. Mr Shackleford can you list the part in the rule you quoted where it says that the Pearce type of play last night is the only place it's the OS decision.

I took out the part where I was spelling out one scenario where the final part of the rule applied... but that scenario was not relevant to the play in question, so I took it out...  but what happened also concerns that last part of the rule...

Is rule 10.04 not clear to you?  Or did you just not look at it?

If a pitcher goes 6 IP and allows 3 ER, thats a "quality start". Also a 4.50 ERA for the game.

If a pitcher goes 8 IP and allows 4 ER, thats not a "quality start". But also the same 4.50 ERA for the game. Doesn't make sense. Depending on the team and their bullpen options, some teams might prefer the 8 IP and 4 ERs to the 6 IP and 3 ER, all things being equal. Like if you have Zach Britton, and 6 Wade Mileys in the bullpen, 8 IP and 4 ER isn't a bad deal. If you have Brach. O'Day, Britton at the top of their game, 6 IP and 3 ERs will do.

Maybe a quality start rule should be 1) at least 6 IP, and 2) 4.00 ERA or better for the outing. (4.50 ERA seems too generous).

That way 6 IP and 2 ER (3.00), 7 IP or 8 IP and 3 ER (3.86 and 3.38 respectively), 9 IP and 4 ER (4.00...I think....) would all be quality starts.

Hasn't been in like 8 pages. Just thought I'd add to the rules portion of the discussion. :P
