I try to explain to non-fans Petty’s ability to write really simple songs that seem OK the first time you hear them and incredible after the 100th time.
That quote sums up my thoughts on Petty.
I saw him in Philly during his last tour a few years back and he put on a solid show. Nothing flashy or anything that would blow you away mind you but I don't expect that from him. He's a professional rocker and he rarely lets me down.
He seemed genuinely glad that fans enjoyed the music and he even half-apologized about having to play some new songs from his latest record.
I've heard the criticisms of Petty but I don't care. He's one of my favorites.

He's one of the most underrated American artists of all time. When you think about bands with a bunch of hits, you rarely think about Petty. But then you start counting the good songs...
He's one of my favorites. The Live Anthology is great, and shows the quality of the overall catolgue... http://en.wikipedia...._Live_Anthology
Can't think of an album I haven't enjoyed... I also think it's simplistic to say his songs are overly simplistic... I kind of get the comment.... but there is plenty of depth to be found as well.

This is pretty neat. Tom Petty sued and was awarded songwriting royalties. Here are the two songs matched up and played simultaneously.

You're right, that is cool...
If they'd had the ability to do that all along, then Chuck Berry would have royalties to half of everything and would be richer than Bill Gates...
