Both Chris and I are in agreement that Northwestern isn't an appealing matchup in the ACC / Big Ten Challenge. If there's one reason to make the trek to this game is Chicago is a great city. I liked when we've playing Indiana and Illinois in the past. I went last year for Illinois and that was fun despite the loss, "shut up Bruce."

Yeah, Northwestern is a horrible draw. If you win, so what? If you lose, it is a poor loss.

For pretty much the same reasons, I am not excited about playing George Mason in the BB&T either.

I'm guessing this largely has to do with MD being irrelevant the last two years.

That said, Northwestern has been an NCAAT bubble team the last few years, so I'm thinking that the organizers see this as a matchup between bubble teams.

I really don't get why the BB&T folks are pitting UM versus Mason. Normally they bring in a BCS school (or someone with a good basketball pedigree) to play the Terps. I'm wondering if there really wasn't any interest for schools to come in, leading me to question if the BB&T has run its course.

It's time to end the BB&T...the attendance has been poor the last few years and if you can't attract a big name team to play MD (hint, hint...Georgetown), just get rid of it...

To be fair, the BB&T wanted Georgetown from the beginning. Georgetown wanted nothing to do with the tournament. After several years of courting the Hoyas, the organizers decided to stop pursuing them. Georgetown will never happen at this tourney.

At this point without either a Gtown-MD matchup or a top 10/15 team to play MD, it will continue to draw poorly and be a lose/lose game for MD playing teams like George Mason.

It is time to end the BB&T or get creative and make it a real tourney possibly with a real local flavor. Georgetown has ducked Maryland for years but if they were to join the BB&T along with some of the locals like Loyola, Mason, Coppin etc. it could be a fun tourney. It will not happen though.

It's Georgetown's home court, so I'm sure other teams wouldn't want to play a "neutral" game there. I don't think it's time to end it at all. Maryland gets to play an annual DC "home" game. Guessing the ratings are OK. It's an upgrade from the directional Florida school they seem to play every game.

I like the BB&T, or at least used to, but agree it's gotten a bit stale. I preferred the tournament format, although the one-day of many games isn't bad either. Just need to get better teams at the tournament more consistently. That'll probably be much easier once Maryland is back in the Sweet 16 more often than not.

Attendance worse for the BB&T than "actual" attendance for the non-conference games? If you look at Comcast, it's not like they are filling up the place especially for non-conference games.

NCAA rules permit a team to play in one "in season" tournament during the year. So, if I'm Turgeon, I'd much rather play in Maui, Puerto Rico, or the preseason NIT before playing in a Baltimore/DC area tourney. You're more likely to get much better competition to help that SOS.

This change in rules several years ago is what led the BB&T to be a one day affair as opposed to an actual tournament.
