ESPNHeading for home

Never let anyone tell you sports doesn't matter. Never let them tell you it's all about the wins, the losses and the stats. Sports is so much more than that. It's your grandfather and you and the way a Sunday Bears game bonds you like Super Glue. It's what you ask of yourself to break four hours in the marathon. It's the way your softball buddies can still laugh about you hitting the ump instead of the cutoff man 30 years later.

You've been better to me than I deserve. No writer in history is more flawed than me, but it was never for lack of trying. It was always in my attempt to get to the truth, or to make it fun, or to make it add up to something meaningful to you.

At age 56, I am surprised he is retiring.

OTOH, why not?  He has devoted most of his life to this, has made plenty of money and wants to leave out his life happier.  Who can blame him?

One of my favorite columnists -- sure, he could be a tad sanctimonious at times but I always enjoyed his columns.

His post 9/11 column still gives me goosebumps when I think about it.

Very talented writer.  Definitely could be a bit pretentious, but I usually enjoyed his work.

(But that time with him on TV telling Stuart Scott to make sure he credited him with breaking a story on Twitter was awful.)

Enjoyed him more growing up, plus he's a Buff so I can't really hate him. He'll still be doing TV apparently and I wouldn't be surprised if he does a column here and there. Good point in there on how he could finally be with his kids on Fathers Day. You do hear that as way too much of a theme not just with athletes but others in the sports industry since it's not your 9-5, weekends off schedule. I don't even know how baseball/hockey/basketball beat writers can do the whole family thing with all the travel, NFL/cfb is doable since the games are almost exclusively on the weekends and it's just a few days.

He retired because he was literally copying his own material for " new" articles.

Once again you have all the answers.

It's just the way you frame things.  You have very little savvy when it comes to making your point.

Compare "Yea, you could see his time was up when he started having to repeat some of his material"

versus

"He retired because he was literally copying his own material for " new" articles."

If you present your opinions better, less people will troll you, I promise.

Yeah, I'm the only one here who is blunt and abrasive in voicing an opinion.

Where is all the Rob trolling?

You need to backup your opinions more. For example, you said that being a manager in baseball is more important than being a head coach in basketball. You just avoided the subject when pressed.

That's absolutely not what I said, and I back up my opinions 99.9% of the time. Even if you disagree with my reasoning.

Get out of here with your bullshit. At least get your facts straight when you come at me.

I might not have quoted word-for-word your thoughts, but you know exactly what I'm talking about. Others called you out there as well, not just me.

Example, was this thread. My opinion is Reily retired , willfully or not, as a columnist because he was plagiarizing his own material and getting heavy criticism for it.

There is just no need to keep hijacking these threads to make an unnecessary troll attempt. I already said, I'm done taking the jabs I get thrown at me. If the goal is to turn threads into steaming piles of craps, keep at it.

BNick is spot on here. Reilly has been phoning it in for quite some time. Good in his day though.

Its completely wrong. Not just being off word for word. Completely wrong.

Blunt, abrasive , arrogant posting style I'll own. Just don't give me some BS that I don't back up my opinions.

Ok well where is your proof that Reilly is retiring because he's repeating himself? Do you have him on the record?

I went back, it was the NFL head coach not NBA head coach which you said was less important, but the same point remains when you were asked to explain you didn't. My fault on not exactly remembering there.
