Makes the Bedard trade look like nothing.

I saw a lot of initial analysis calling the trade a near wash. However, I agree with the consensus we have seen as the day has moved on - that if you are a Padres fan, you have to love all the talent (and years under team control) which have been obtained.

I'll add my own two cents here. I thought the Reds made a great deal. Latos is a legit number one. They did give up 2 legitimate hitting prospects, but where, exactly, were they going to play? Depth for a guy who has posted #'s comparable to the big boys of the game---Felix, Lester, CC, et all.

Hi Gary, glad to see you on the boards!

Great to be here Chris. Nice job with these. I know firsthand how hard it is to keep these running.

Thanks for the link. Hope you are well.

He may be a #1 starter but he isn't an elite #1 and isn't a true ace.

His xFIP is in the mid 3s. His walk rate is solid but not elite.

His K rate is very good. His K/BB ratio is always excellent but it took a big drop(along with his K rate) in 2011 from 2010.

The last 2 years, his HR/FB % has been a little on the lucky side...of course, he is pitching in one of the best pitchers parks in the league and he gives up a lot of flyballs. His HR rate will go up in Cinci, no doubt about that.

He does a good job of throwing strikes and he misses bats.

He is also young, so he can improve in certain areas.

Latos is very good and he may soon be amongst the elite and if he gets to that point, this trade could end up being excellent no matter what the other guys do.

But if you are Cinci, you have to ask yourself, what could I have gotten for this package? For example, would Tampa have dealt you Wade Davis for Alonso, kept the other guys and used them for something else?

Could you have gotten Gio Gonzalez for a little less? If you offered Alonso, Grandal and Boxberger for Gio, that would be a tough deal to turn down.

I get it, if you make the playoffs, you want that horse. Maybe Latos will be that guy, a guy you give up the farm for.

Is he there yet? I think he is on the cusp but I think they could have turned these players into more players and been a deeper and better overall team.

Cinci is a good offensive club but they are essentially putting all their eggs in the Latos basket.

They have 2 years to contend until Votto walks. Perhaps their thought, since they did trade parts where they already have depth, is to get the #1 starter and try to win right now before Votto walks.

The question is, would they have been better off getting a slightly worse pitcher and a few other pieces for what they gave up to just get Latos? To me, that's why this was a poor trade.

Plus, if Volquez can stay healthy(which I agree may be a big if), he probably won't be much worse than what Latos will be.

I absolutely love this deal for the Padres. Not saying the Reds did not get a good starter, they got a great young one, but the excuse that those guys were blocked is not one that I like to use to bring the value of the trade chips down. Value is value and the Padres got the most value in this deal. They had a 1B prospect in Rizzo and Blanks already there but it didn't make them see less value in Alonso.

Great trade for the Padres. Latos is a great young pitcher but that is a haul. I'm not sure what Cincinnati is thinking, I don't think they were one 1 or 2 starter away from a World Series run.

I'd like to see the O's inquire on Blanks and/or Rizzo.
