I woke up today to a Facebook post of "boy or girl." It took me all of half-a-second to realize this was probably an April Fools prank considering this person isn't married and hasn't been in a relationship that long. Could I be wrong here, of course. I already mentioned in rants I didn't like today, but here's why: Out of all the "holidays," this is the most annoying, overdone, and contrived. Social media has made this day infinitely worse. The fake life events just aren't funny after a while. And then there's always the person whose fake engagement or pregnancy seems plausible, you don't know what to say. I feel bad when real news actually happens today because you don't believe it by noon. On top of this sports media tries to be funny by announcing bogus trades and free agent signings. And you see fans say stupid things like "I'm now a Steelers fan." I'll be glad, once it's April 2nd.

I don't mind clever, original pranks. But the fake deaths, fake babies, fake marriages have been done a million times before. As a kid, I always tried to come up with something new each year to freak out my parents. It was always fun and always ended with a lot of laughs. But the internet kinda ruined an otherwise fairly harmless holiday.

Agree with a lot of this. It was definitely more tolerable pre-Internet. The fake breakups maybe the worse. After all, you never want to come across as a jack*** but when it's revealed it was fake, you feel like a moron. The ones I hate the most are that seem to be plausible. Like let's say the headline was "Manny out until the All-Star break," that is something which is believable but it's such a cruel joke to play on O's fans. And when you have an emotional investment in a sports team like many of us do, it's just not fair to play with someones passion.

I'm setting up a prank for my kids at dinner today.  We've all been sick with terrible colds for a couple weeks now.   I have an empty Windex bottle that I'm going to fill with blue Gatorade today.   At dinner, I'm going to say "Oh, hey, I read on the internet today that if you put a few squirts of Windex in a glass of water and drink it, the ammonia soothes your throat.".   I'll then do it, and as they're grossed out, I will say "What?", unscrew the cap, and take a big swig.

I can't wait :)

Edit:  They are 17, 15, and 12, so there is no risk of them actually drinking chemicals from under the counter in the future because of this ;)

Does the Onion do a reverse and publish actual news?

I remember a couple years ago The Aegis had an article in their April 1 edition discussing the discovery of a WWII-era tunnel from APG under the bay to a spot on the Eastern Shore, and the possible uses for it. It took us longer than I'm proud of to realize that the line continuing the story further in the paper read, "See April Fools page 7." :P

I like some of the sillier stuff. The fake products on ThinkGeek.com. Drew Carey and Craig Ferguson switching shows for the day (Carey hosted The Late Late Show last night, Ferguson is on The Price is Right today). That kind of thing. As long as it isn't too malicious, it's fun.

Got my wife a little while ago. I had actually forgotten about it being April Fools. Just some harmless texting but it did involve my job and she bought it. Lol, she responded with a laugh after saying she hated me.

I think she was kidding.

It would have been funnier in the TV thread, but I still chuckled.

My fiance tried to get me, telling me she was pregnant. So I acted excited, then sad that she was joking. When she bought that, I got her.

My grandmother used to make my mom walk to the neighbors house to "borrow a pot of steam"

She would also make my mom dress up warm for school if it was a mild April 1

Thats the good stuff. I get annoyed by simple lies on April Fools, but like a good prank. I remember WQSR convinced people that spanish doubloons were found on the constellation and were being raffled off. That one I liked too.

My mom would put a few plastic roaches in my school lunch when I was growing up. Even when I expected it, I loved it.
