Honestly, I don't think you can look at this deal as anything but a positive.

First of all, while I want to see them get the younger international players, you still have to be encouraged that they continue to look into this market.

Secondly, they didn't spend any money here.

Lastly, there is upside to him providing a lot of value.

I love the structure of the contract as well.

No reason to be anything but positive about this move IMO.

Even if he sucks, he was worth the small gamble.

That's how I look at it...  as a fan, I also find the 'unknown quantity' aspect to be interesting.

I'm just hoping we see him healthy, and get a chance to see him at his best.

Agreed.  We'll see how it works out.

Again though....there really isn't any competition for his services.....the Orioles can only get guys others aren't really on.

Like Uehara and Chen, we're probably giving him a rotation shot others won't give him.

Cory Aldridge ‏@aldridge32  1m

@MyKBO glad to see Yoon get a shot. Told you a couple years ago that he would get a shot. I was even questioned by the orioles about him.

For those that don't remember, DD signed Aldridge going into ST 2012. Kind of cool to see DD exhausting all routes and options to get info on (potential) international players.

Provision in #Orioles' contract w/ Yoon says he cant be optioned 2 minors in 2015 or '16. He could start this year in minors 2 get adjusted.

I think this provision (allowing him to be optioned this year) just allows the O's to make sure he's fully healthy and recovered from his bout of shoulder tendinitis last season.

It's smart on his part because now he'll get a shot to start in Bowie and move up. If he does well, he'll have a shot to start in 2015. If not, then at least he'll be better prepared for life as a reliever.

That provision is very helpful as it allows the O's to be more flexible with their roster.

Yes, great work. O's aren't locked into having him on the 25 man to start the year. That's big.

Yoon's contract is even more better (yeah) with a minor league option for 2014.

Orioles can certainly use that flexibility this season to get other guys into the bullpen and them make him an option for 2015.

Not sure if I said this on here or not, but I think the O's plan to roll it out like this:

The O's will start him in AA Bowie to attempt to stretch him out as a starter. If it works then they'll bring him up when/if someone gets hurt, or if he pitches so well they can't keep him down. If he doesn't, they shift him to the bullpen and fast-track him to the majors.

EDIT - Pretty sure I discussed this on Sports Tonight last night, but at this point everything Yoon & Jimenez is blurring together.

Credit the organization for a good plan and a contract that supports it.

I don't really see how he gets anything but spot starts, but it would be good to see him log some innings this year and see where he stands for a 2015 bullpen role (anything from closer to long-relief)

Agreed. Or if he's needed in the pen, bring him up. He has experience both as a starter and as a reliever.

MASN: Yoon Update
http://www.masnsport...oon-update.html

"Suk-min Yoon is flying to Ottawa today, where it's 10 degree, to obtain his work visa. He has a meeting scheduled for Monday and hopes to return by Wednesday. Thursday at the latest.

Yoon will throw a bullpen session today before leaving camp. He's eager to pitch in a game because he's been ready for a while."

Optioned to AAA today.

“He’s not going to start with us, but we think he has a chance to be with us at some point,” Showalter said. “I think he said it the other day and in talking to him, he needs to go down there and pitch innings. They are starting to go away.”

@DavidHallVP: Line so far on Yoon: 2 1/3 IP, 9 ER, 11 H, 1 BB, 0 K, 57 pitches, 39 strikes. Still responsible for a man on second. #Orioles #Tides

11 hits and 9 runs on 57 pitches? Ouch!
