I guess it's not exactly PC, but the Orioles should be doing some sort of auction or contest where the winning fan gets to buy Manny his "first" drink for his 21st birthday. And as Joe Angel suggested, it should be a double!

Manny is a joy to watch. I love sitting behind home plate so I can watch first movement and footwork of the fielders. Manny is incredible for a guy who has played his position. He is decisive and quick at third base and has terrific range. I heard Kruk say Manny is competing with Beltre and Longoria for the gold glove, but IMO, Manny's range separate him. As for the bat he is special. Great plate coverage, quick bat, ability to take a pitch where it is thrown. The homers are going to come but as he is know he is a 200 hit a year guy. We really lucked out getting Manny.

Damn we can't use the whole "He can't even legally drink" line anymore. Happy bday Manny!

@Britt_Ghiroli: Buck was hilarious today. Talking about how the Os kinda got Manny in a trade. "We traded our season the year before."
Hadn't really thought about it, doesn't speak too well for our ability to scout and develop talent. And as Buck alluded to, we "traded" our season to get Manny. Our last real "homegrown" All-Star who wasn't a top-5 pick¬ some can't miss prospect (Wieters) was B-Rob in 2007, before that Cal.

Mussina was a 1st round pick, but went 20th overall.

Teams should get credit for drafting and developing an All Star even if they are a top-5 pick. I think it should be beyond obvious to everyone that being a top-5 or top-10 pick is far from a guarantee to ever become a regular player, yet alone an All Star.

Agreed. Especially when they'll get blasted when they don't work out (Wieters, BMat)... (Not work out meaning, not becoming what we expected in these cases).

Yep, I was going to list them before Cal, but I felt like it take a little long. Cal made it in his last year in 2001(homered in that game as I'm sure everyone remembers), Mussina made it with us in 1999.

It's a fair point, I give more credit when it's not such an obvious pick. I was commenting on Buck's reaction to Manny getting selected. I don't think anyone is shocked that Manny and Wieters ended up as All-Stars. At the same time, both players and the org should get their due for their achievements.

IIRC every draft person in the world had the top 3 as Harper, Tallion, and Machado in some order. After that it was a huge drop off. It was just a matter of not screwing it up and taking which one fell to them and not selecting a Hobgood type to try and sign overslots later.

I think everyone had Harper #1, I think you're right on #2/#3. I think every O's mock draft I saw had Machado going to us. It was a good year to be bad.

Seems like Machado is starting to come back down to earth a little. Just a little. Certainly not knocking the guy. But I see a lot of Adam Jones in his approches lately. Swinging often, and at some poor pitches.
Yep....he needs to start walking more.
He has a very high BABIP, which will even out some, thus dropping his numbers.
Btw, you see why people rate Harper and Trout over him.

Manny also said he's a better 3rd baseman than a SS on MLBN.
I've been saying that for 2 years and no one listens. Yay manny.
