Austin Martin, #5 pick from lost years draft, #16 overall heads to the Twins for Jose Berrios. 

 

Basically, what should be the asking price for a stellar, established major leaguer.

Woah.  I saw that Woods Richardson was going and thought that was a decent haul for Berrios plus some lesser guys.  Martin is not just some lesser guy, he's worth more even if he's done nothing tremendously special this year (800 OPS at 22 at AA).  This is the biggest price a buyer has paid, IMO, for what they are getting.

 

Diaz at the time, btw, compared similarly to Woods Richardson and either of the guys the Dodgers just dealt, IMO.  Middle of the top-100.  Martin is top-20 right now on MLB.com, top-25 pretty much everywhere.  He's another level.

Blue Jays paid more for Berrios than the Dodgers paid for Scherzer & Turner.  That's wild.  I think Turner is a better player than Berrios and they have equal control left, Turner is more expensive though so that counts for something.

Arb-eligible next year for the final time.  He's making ~$6M this year so he'll likely only cost somewhere in the $10M range next year.  He's a guy with a good but not great ERA who's main ability is availability as he frequently makes all his starts and pitches deep into games.  Basically a 2021 version of a workhorse, 200 innings a year with an ERA in the 3.50-4.00 range.

 

Woods Richardson would be one where you could consider yourself selling high before his star fades, he's having a very bad season statistically.  Martin I can't see any argument for that.

Toronto is really loaded offensively.    They may have to sacrifice Semien to add more pitching, but they have a ton of young talent, in Vlad, Bichette, and maybe even Cavan Biggio.  I could see them heading up the division if they are smart with their pitching choices.

I'd just like to contrast this against the ERod contract with comparison to the Patrick Corbin deal.

 

Berrios and ERod are at a similar point as was Corbin.  Corbin had the luxury of something of a bidding war and got a bump as a LHer coming off a big year.  Berrios kind of gets the softer, non-competitive (ie, not FA) version of the same contract.  RHed, his career ERA+ is 108, so locking up 7/131 is a pretty reasonable deal.  Corbin locked up 6/140M.

 

Even coming off the poorer season, ERod has a career ERA+ of 110 and he's LHed. 

 

It would have been completely reasonable for Berrios to pitch out 2022 nad hit the FA market where he could have potentially done better, but like ERod, he made choices on something other than pursuing the biggest contract.  All of that is fine.  131M is a lot of money.  It's not 150M, but it's still more money than he can spend.

 

My only point remains that there's lots of ways for priorities for players to create contract opportunities and they aren't all based on making the most money in their professional Baseball lives.  I'm fine with all of them.
