I disagree that it's torture porn. People are using that term to denounce the film. But I agree it's a powerful, infuriating, brutal film and is the best movie of the year from what I've seen. Looking forward to Her, seeing it Thursday, The Master was my favorite film of 2012.

I wasn't using "torture porn" in a negative context, but I guess I can see how that is used that way - wasn't my intention. Point was that it was hard to watch sometimes just from the brutality of how some of the main characters were abused.

Absolutely, just not the word I would use. Mostly because people are saying the director is being self indulgent which I disagree with. When I hear torture porn I think Hostel, which I liked to an extent but certainly wouldn't compare to 12 Years.

I gotcha. Poor word choice then. It wasn't at all self indulgent, at least not IMO.

Stalingrad, Russia's highest-grossing film of all time, will have a one-week engagement in IMAX theaters, Columbia Pictures announced on Thursday.

The one-week IMAX showing will begin on Feb. 28. Sony is planning to release it in other theaters at a later date.

The 3D World War II epic, which is Russia’s official entry for best foreign language film to the Academy Awards, is the first Russian movie made complete  in 3D and the first Russian film to be released in IMAX format.

Following a band of Russian soldiers fighting to hold a strategic building against a ruthless German army, Stalingrad is already a big hit in foreign markets after opening in Russia, China, Poland and Ukraine. It became Russia’s highest-grossing movie of all time when it earned $66 million since opening on Oct. 10. It's also grossed $11.5 million in China after opening in late October.

I don't think it's changing anyone's opinion on the matter, that should be pretty well set in stone I'd say. It's a powerful portrait of one man's story and more universally speaks of how quickly things can change in anyone's life. Don't just assume because you're free today that you will be tomorrow.

Apparently the movie is pretty bad and unrealistic. It's a shame because the battle deserves a movie worthy of its historical importance.
I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Fruitvale Station is legit. Strong recommendation from me. Surprised Michael B Jordan and Octavia Spencer aren't getting any awards buzz. Anyone else seen it yet?

So when we get to the Oscars there might be people asking *puts on sunglasses* "Where's Wallace?"

Maybe. Best Actor is a very strong category this year but you just don't hear his name mentioned enough. And I still need to watch The Wire...

Not sure where to put this, but anyone watching the 30 for 30 on Nancy Kerringan/Tonya Harding? Hard to believe it's been 20 years.

Spike Jonze strikes again with Her. A film that rings so true and the world building is so well done it took me like 5-10 minutes to adjust back to the real world afterwards. It's also very funny. 9/10

"'O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Is soooo good. Great soundtrack too.

One time took a winter class at UMD where part of the curriculum was watching that movie. Best 3 days of college class ever.

Enough Said. Gandolfini was great. So sad to be reminded that he's gone. Instantly loveable character. A grown up romantic comedy. *** out of ****

20 Feet From Stardom. A nice documentary about backup singers, mostly in the 70's. Lots of good music. 7.5/10
