Why not Sheffield this or next year?
Only get 10 votes.
Fair enough.

Sweetspot: Nomar and the most underrated player ever
You realize what this list shows, right? Essentially, it serves an an excellent proxy for what could be labeled the "inner circle" of the Hall of Fame. Thirty-six position players have had six seasons of 6+ WAR and nearly all are Hall of Famers, will be Hall of Famers or would be Hall of Famers if not for PEDs ... with two exceptions.

NBC Sports / HBT: Here’s what I think will happen with the Hall of Fame voting today

That's about what I would expect, though I had hoped Piazza would squeak in over the line.
It's a good point about how impressive it is to get four elected, though. Of course, the real problem is that the writers simply haven't been electing enough recently, so they SHOULD be voting three-to-five players in each year for at least a little while.

Its laughable how much Smoltz is going to beat Schilling and Mussina by in %. Especially, Mussina. These writers really are pretty bad.

The greatest offensive catcher in history can't get in. The system and the voters are both flawed.

He gets in next year. No doubt. It'll be him and Griffey.
I'm actually pretty happy with the voting this year. I'm going to continue to be disappointed as long as deserving guys don't get in, and until the Hall makes some real changes in regards to the voting process and quits wussing out on certain stands they need to take. But the four guys who got in deserve it, other guys made pretty decent jumps, and with only a couple of really strong candidates coming onto the ballot next year I think there will be some real jumps.
Early predictions:
Griffey and Piazza make the Hall.
Hoffmann ends up around 50 percent, then gets in within a couple years once Lee Smith falls off the ballot.
Bagwell ends up where Piazza is this year, between 65-70%, poised to make the final leap in 2017. Raines gets a big push and gets over 60%, ready for one last voter push in his last year.
Schilling and Mussina get huge jumps, the former close to 60% and the latter into the high 40s.
Garciaparra falls off the ballot, while Sheffield gets some additional votes.

Somebody voted for Darrin Erstad, too.
I have no problem with people being willing to throw a random guy an "emotional" vote like that. Unless that vote takes one away from a more-deserving candidate.

I have a pretty big problem with it, especially in a year like this when there are so many deserving guys that are sitting at home.
Imagine if Tim Raines was 1-2 votes shy and the clowns that voted for Erstad and Boone voted for them instead of him?

That said, if you truly only believe 3-4 guys deserve to make it and you want to vote for Boone for whatever reason, that's a little better.
I still would never do it, but at least then you're not throwing dirt on a deserving player's candidacy.

Like I said, not if it takes a vote away. Next year, for example, I might be willing to throw one of those votes at Jason Kendall or Gary Matthews Jr. But, the ballot is going to be crowded again, so no chance. Same in 2017, when Arthur Rhodes and Melvin Mora get their year in the sun.

A slight aside to the full-ballots discussion: http://hardballtalk....-all-ten-slots/
Over half of the ballots had ten players listed, and as a group the voters averaged 8.4 votes per ballot. In 2013, it was 22% full ballots.
So some of the writers are willing to adjust, it seems.
