Did you really call Jim Johnson a "spare part"?

Weeks looks like Alexi Casilla, just not as good.

This was only about getting rid of Johnson, Weeks isn't meaningful.

Johnson was going to be non-tendered at midnight and walk away from the Orioles, so at the time of the trade, he was more or less a spare part. They were moving on without him. Like you said, it was about getting rid of Johnson. I'm betting that we see Weeks at some point in 2014, so it's nice to know a little bit about him.

OK, I guess if you want to look at that way.

He was leaving because of a condition (ARB3) that the Orioles were unable to consider), not quality.

Spare part seems to speak more to quality.  Jemile Weeks was a spare part for OAK.

Johnson was certainly a usable piece.  Weeks was not a piece being used.

Just a thought. Done.

Couldn't we have non-tendered Johnson and then tried to work out a deal for lesser money, but maybe a longer deal had he gone to arbitration had we really wanted him on the team?

I don't view Weeks as much more than AAA fodder.

No, that's fair. Maybe spare part wasn't the right term, but I think the team saw him as extraneous. I got the impression that the team was ready to move on without him, so he felt like the extra screw at the end of building an Ikea cabinet.

Yup, they definitely could have, but I think we would have been competing against a number of other teams. Weeks has looked like a AAA player (and not always a good one) over the last two seasons, but has put it together well enough once to be one of the game's top prospects. He'll be 27, so he doesn't have much time to turn it around, but he could be a serviceable backup 2B or even compete for a starting spot if things break his way.

As much as Weeks has struggled in parts of the last two seasons, he needs one more chance as his approach is solid.

I've warmed a bit to the idea of Flaherty, but I would love if Weeks had a nice spring and won the second base job. And not just so Hardy could get some serious deja vu.

Weeks was the most talented kid on his college team that included Yasmani Grandal, Yonder Alonso, Blake Tekotte, Ryan Jackson (who have all made the show) and some various others (like a young Terdoslavich).

I think he will make an impact at some point this year.  He's an up the middle player with speed, OBP and solid D.  Tough to find those under team control for cheap.

I've got a fairly open mind in regard to Weeks. One thing is for sure, he has a real chance to win a starting spot in ST. Flaherty prob has a slight edge heading in, but in no way would I classify it as his spot to lose.

I just find it annoying that improvement lies in the hands of Oakland's 3rd middle-infielder and KC's 5th OFer.

That's an organizational issue, not a "Weeks can be helpful if he is given the chance" issue.

I hope he's great.  I hope he lives up to the promise others once saw in him.

But I have no real expectations of what he's going to do.
