ESPN: Joe Torre, Tony La Russa lead ballot

http://espn.go.com/m...all-fame-ballot

Retired managers Joe Torre, Tony La Russa and Bobby Cox will join holdovers George Steinbrenner and Marvin Miller on the Hall of Fame expansion era committee ballot next month.

Dave Concepcion, Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Billy Martin and Ted Simmons also are held over from the 2010 ballot, while Dave Parker and Dan Quisenberry have been added. Vida Blue, Ron Guidry, Al Oliver and Rusty Staub have been dropped.

The committee will gather at the winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., and its vote will be announced there Dec. 9.

Anyone elected will be inducted into the Hall during ceremonies in Cooperstown on July 24 with any players chosen by the BBWAA. Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas are among the newcomers to the BBWAA balloting, which will be announced Jan. 8.

This is because the Hall of Fame ritual has become, more than anything else, a way for an electorate dominated by neo-Puritan scolds, milquetoast handwringers, and straight-out dimwits to show how high its standards are by telling people like Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Jeff Bagwell, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Mike Piazza, and Curt Schilling that they're just not good enough. What was meant as a way to honor great ballplayers is now an annual exercise in vigorously insulting them, and thereby asserting the power of the baseball writer.

...

The sensible thing to do would be to just stop paying attention to this raging trash fire, but we don't think that's enough. We're going to seize some small, symbolic bit of power and turn it over to the public. We're going to buy a Hall of Fame vote.

As some brilliant mind already posted in the comments there:

I always love looking at these players. Anyone who can survive for ten years in the majors had some ability worth celebrating, and this time of year is perfect for remembering them. Of course, if I had a vote I'd be the guy throwing token votes at the BJ Surhoffs of the world.

Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Mike Mussina, Frank Thomas, and Jeff Kent should be one hell of a HOF class.

I think all 5 should be locks, but I can see Kent missing out and Mussina and Thomas may not be first ballot.

On second look, of guys who are eligible....

Greg Maddux, Mike Mussina, Tom Glavine, and Curt Schlling (2nd year) all belong in the HoF.

Frank Thomas, Jeff Bagwell (4th year), Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza (2nd year), and Jeff Kent all belong in.

Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Rafael Palmerio have no chance. I fear pretty much any hitter from the 90's may be grouped with these guys.

Saw Lance posted this on Facebook. This can't be legal, can it? Still, I like it.

God does Deadspin ever take themselves way too seriously.

It'll probably be apparent who sold their vote and they should be kicked out after they do it. Assuming there is an actual transfer of money.

How do you think it will be apparent?

HardballTalk: Deadspin managed to buy a Hall of Fame vote

Put differently, wouldn’t it be pretty damning of the Hall of Fame voting process as a whole if the person who sold their vote has no reason to care, no investment in baseball or the Hall of Fame and is beyond any semblance of control or sanction from the BBWAA?

I like what deadspin is doing here. The point in the last post is a good one.

Anyway, it's going to be even more interesting than usual to see how the voting turns out this year. There were already arguably roughly 10 deserving players and now 4 more are being added. Will this hurt the chances of guys getting in? I have to think it will. Then next year there's Randy Johnson, Pedro, Smoltz, and Sheffield being added. This may be a big problem for those like me who think there's so many deserving players being kept out.

Neyer: Blame the BBWAA? Sure, go ahead. But don't stop there.

HardballTalk: Madden: the Deadspin Hall of Fame vote-buy is “one of the most despicable things I can ever think of”

But hey, if Madden and other baseball writers believe that it is their gatekeeping which gives the place public legitimacy, well, God bless them. But understand that such an arrogance is exactly why people like Deadspin and this rogue voter are doing what they’re doing. And why, in the Internet age, when people who do not work for newspapers can actually have their voices heard, the folks who are the gatekeepers are getting a lot of blowback.
