So I watched the show live yesterday. First time I've done that in ages. Commercials and all. I didn't want to be spoiled but really, it wouldn't have mattered. The show has become all about who dies and less about themes.
The deaths were brutal, especially the second one, but overall it was a letdown of an episode.
I think there is potential with this season, thematically, though. Interested to see where it goes...

I don't think there is gonna be any change in theme or pattern. Rick and Co. are gonna be subservient for, oh, 3 episodes. Probably will be some torture-porn-esque violence from Negan and his men. Maybe another main character dies in a show of strength. Stretch things out with a stand-alone, side story episode about Morgan or Carole for what will probably be the best episode of the season. Then Rick will give a big speech and they'll start planning their revenge/attack on Negan, involving several characters deciding to go further into depravity than they ever have before, which will take place at the end of the season but with unclear results. Rinse. Repeat. Zombies.

Since there is like a 5 year gap in the plotlines of Fear The Walking Dead, and TWD - they should weave in a character from FTWD.... they got to the East Coast, they have a role. It's not made clear how they got there.
And Mackus' post above might be the most spot on post in the history of this board.

I knew I was going to watch the premiere after the cliffhanger last season but Im likely done watching this on a week to week basis. Nowhere close to must watch. Probably let it run through the 1st half break and then catch up.

As someone who's read the graphic novels, I'm probably more excited about this season than the ones I've seen so far. There's some good characters/arcs coming down the pipeline. The main problem is that they really don't involve zombies, so...I don't know how that's going to work.

The deaths were brutal, but the show has certainly got repetitive and predictable.

In the end, I fully expect the show to completely ruin the source material. While trying to tell their own stories that will end up being no where close to as good as the novels like always. I'm still bitter at how they ruined Andrea.

I think a better way to handle this scene would have been to show Abraham getting it in the finale last season. Let people stew on his death and be glad everyone else made it through, only to off Glen in the premiere this season as well.

Disagree. Abraham would've been seen as a copout, only slightly more impactful than killing Eugene or Aaron or Rosita (solely because he's so badass, not because he's been developed that much better or is more important). I mean, wasn't everyone thinking, "laaaaame" when he was the big reveal?
If they offed him at the end of last season, they wouldn't have drawn the crowd they did this year. It was audience manipulation 101, a cheap thrill not to be confused with good storytelling, but it certainly worked to draw in an audience.
And then the second kill after everyone was pretty disappointed was a good twist, IMO. I didn't see it coming until Daryl punched Negan, as obvious as it seemed after the fact.

You miss my point. Yes Abraham would have been seen as a cop out. However they would have avoided the total shitshow that was the month or so after they had a ton of build up for no pay off, and probably the worst cliff hanger for a major show I've personally seen. I know a lot of people that are done with the show and could care less who died after how they handled it. And yes, they truly haven't watched and have no interest any more.
If you show Abe. Go to black. Then have the same premiere minus Abe's end obviously, I think you would have gotten way more bang for your buck.

I just watched the last two and it regained a little bit of value for me.
Negan is probably the best villain they've had, and we've seen what his rule has done to a lot of people. Dwight has become pretty interesting. I still always have in the back of my mind that Rick and Co will be alright, but its far tenser now than some past middle sections of seasons.
I didn't like Rick's speech to Michonne towards the end, I've seen that before.
The infamous "Chekov's gun" has been prominent in many shows before, but this most recent episode gave us many to ponder. The bullet at the end for Rosita's gun makes an obvious candidate, but I think Rick beats Negan with "Lucille" before its all said and done based on this episode.
I also want to comment on "Lucille." That was BB King's guitar. That was the name of some pool cue in a movie or TV show I once saw. That was the name of other weapon's I've seen. Back at the end of middle school that idea was already in my mind when I named a quarterstaff Lucille and would easily beat my friend Alden in fake sparring matches. (I'm big and have a helluva reach, that helps.) I don't like that the writers, whoever they are, went back into that well. There are other names for weapons of choice.
(Don't approach the line to spoil anything for me. This is cheap entertainment, but I still like surprises.)

To be fair to the writers of the show, Kirkman named the bat Lucille in his comics.

Another filler episode.
They've really painted themselves into a corner with the Saviors. They've already played their hand and now they can't really do anything else until they start to fight back.

I think we've approached the Big Problem.
In the books (I don't think it's a spoiler), at this point, there just aren't a lot of zombies right now. Sure, they show up, but everything is mostly Negan/Hilltop/Kingdom/Alexandria, and all things in between. However, People Want Zombies Dammit, so they have to keep finding ways for there to be zombies, and for people to get into hairy situations, and make it last. And that's just impossible to do.
I can't say much more without spoiling, but there's a lot of "what are we going to DO about this guy?" that's much more compelling in print than on the screen, IMO.
