I'm not sure that this is a huge deal but it did catch my eye reading through the day's sports topics.

UMD doesn't retire numbers but rather honors players on banners above the court.

Dixon is MD's all-time leading scorer so I'm curious to hear what people think.

Does Dixon have the right of refusal for players to wear his old number?

I don't think he has the "right" to refuse another player wearing his old number. But I agree with Turgeon employing the protocol of reaching out to him first. The fact that Dixon said no.....eh. Seems a little silly, but not a big deal.

What else does he have going for him right now? Let Juan have this one.

Also:

So is there any pressure wearing Logan Aronhalt’s old jersey number?

I love Don Markus.

Maybe he didn't want to give up the number... but others have suggested Dixon told Peters to carve out his own legacy.

Definitely don't think it's a big deal but can easily see how it'd come off as a douche move on Juan's part.

If I were in Dixon's shoes I think I would have done things differently, but agree with the notion its not a big deal.

Also, its literally Juan Dixon's birthday today (35) so lets cut him some slack.

I really wish you hadn't posted his age.

Unless they have an official policy retiring numbers, I'd say not.

That I can go with. My whole stance on the retiring numbers thing is this... you don't want it worn again, take it out of circulation or have a specified moratorium on it.

Reminds me of this (via Orlando Sentinel)

Matthews has the inside track to start the Sept. 8 season opener against Arizona at FedEx Field. Being the favorite, though, doesn't automatically make him a fan favorite -- something Matthews learned his first few days in town when he asked for his lucky No. 9, the number he had donned since his Pop Warner days in Mississippi.

The No. 9, though not officially retired by the team, had not been worn since 1974, Jurgensen's final season in the NFL (when he led the league in passing efficiency at the age of 40). A longtime equipment manager had ceased to issue the digit.

Management suggested Matthews call Jurgensen and request the honor to wear it. So Matthews, with his 19 career touchdown passes and 15 NFL starts, made the call and the pitch to Jurgensen, who has 255 career touchdown passes and a bronze bust in Canton, Ohio.

"It's OK with me, kid," Jurgensen told him. "But you'll be opening a can of worms with some people in Washington."

Within hours, word had spread. By the afternoon, Matthews was being crushed on the airwaves for daring to take on a legend. The next day, stories and columns appeared in local papers detailing and commenting on the events of the day before, all of which culminated with Matthews saying, "Enough!"

This season, Matthews will wear No. 6. An upside-down "9," he figures, is the next-best thing. "I'm beginning to understand the tradition around here," he says. "Hopefully, I can add something to it."

Sonny handled that pretty well IMO, basically saying you shouldn't without actually saying that.

I had heard this morning that Gary Williams actually told kids they couldn't wear #3. That even though numbers were not retired, that one was off limits. Apparently Grevis Vasquez and PeShon Howard both asked Williams and were denied. So they chose 21, 2+1=3.

I guess he never passed the message on to Turgeon, so when asked, he told Peters to ask Dixon.

Gary held Dixon in the highest regard. He was asked once of all his players he every coached, if he needed one shot, who gets it? He said Juan Dixon.

Yeah I could see that not flying while GW was there. I don't have a problem with Turgeon not upholding this. Even if GW did tell Turgeon, it's not GW's call IMO at this point, Turgeon should be able to oversee MD basketball how he wants without outside interference. Like I said, if UMD thinks what Dixon did warranted no other player ever wearing that number again, retire it. That ends this issue.
