I don't think Miley is a 3.00 ERA pitcher.  I don't think he's gonna be a major asset, but I think he'll be a capable back-of-rotation piece.

 

I think Miranda will struggle to remain in the majors.  If he establishes himself as a useful starter, then he's certainly more valuable than Miley given cost.

 

It's not so much about establishing yourself. It's about getting what you can out of someone before they start to suck and identifying when they will and getting rid of them or avoiding signing them when they show signs of sucking.

 

Pretty much all of Duquette's SP acquisitions have been terrible.

There are/were pitchers we could have gone after that were legit MLB starters that fell between the two extremes. DDDD seems to say well we can't get a really good starter so we'll go after some downward trending guys, or older has beens, and see if we can squeeze blood out of a turnip. Bull shit approach.

2016/2017 Miley: 1.4 rWAR (w/Orioles)
2016/2017 Miranda: 1.1 rWAR (w/ Mariners)

Very similar amount of innings/starts.

fWAR (FIP based) is much worse for Miranda.

edit: I thought Miranda's xFIP might be better based on the extraordinary amount of HR's he yleds, but it's really not. Probably because he yields a high amount of HR's in more pitcher friendly parks.

Miley is better than Miranda...he may not be 8.5M better though.

Miranda is shit outside of Safeco. Every reason to assume he would be here playing more games against the AL East
