They weren't going to fire him(or shall I say not bring him back) after leading them to the WS. And I doubt they are going to let him retire on his own terms with the next bad season(s) he has.I think they're showing him a ton of respect by basically letting him decide when he wants to retire. I think he'll get one year deals until he's ready to retire. He's already been on record saying that Detroit is his last stop.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note
"Now OPS sucks. Got it."
"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."
"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

@MLB: #Tigers sign RHP Jose Valverde to 1-year deal. He will join the club tomorrow and manager Jim Leyland says he will be the team’s closer.
1. I thought he already signed and was in their system.
2. Is this in addition to Rondon?

No, he was a FA. Was waiting to see where he was going to end up.
Yep.

I think in this case the "signed to a major-league contract" is one of those anachronistic baseball terms like "purchasing a contract" from an affiliate.

Ah, I guess I was wrong. Thought I remember reading about some other teams checking in on him as a FA with their own closing issues.
