With the Fielder signing, the Tigers are a popular World Series pick.

Obviously Cabrera, and Fielder are going to bash. Jackson, Boesch, Peralta, and Avila give the lineup depth. Rayburn, and Young have some pop as well.

Behind Verlander, the Tigers have Scherzer, Porcello, and Fister. Valverde, who was a perfect 49 of 49 in save chances last year, blew his first save opportunity today.

During the Tigers / Red Sox telecast today, the ESPN announcers stated that Cabrera had lost some weight. I'm guessing he is still going to have a difficult adjustment at 3rd.

In the weakest division in baseball, I think it's very possible for the Tigers if not likely for them to make the playoffs.

ESPN: Big payroll teams not holding up

http://espn.go.com/m...-not-holding-up

But a team with a $132 million payroll should not be desperate for wins in the middle of September. Especially considering said team is playing in the worst division in baseball.

ESPN: Max Scherzer twists ankle

http://espn.go.com/m...tle-celebration

I've thought since the Kendry Morales celebration (actually before that), don't over-celebrate for this reason. This first became an issue to me when Brian Roberts hit that game-winner in 2005 against the Yanks, and he put his hands over his head since he knew he was gonna get mobbed. Nothing happened of course, but this is a really stupid reason to get injured. I realize people get caught up in the moment though.

ESPN: Celebrate Tiger Stadium

http://espn.go.com/m...-little-fanfare

Tiger Stadium's 100th anniversary that same day, however, was commemorated by 200 or so loyal fans gathering over the course of the day at what remains of the beloved old park -- the field, the flagpole, an entry gate -- at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull. Volunteer groundskeepers mowed the grass, fans ran the bases, played catch and ate grilled hot dogs, and they all watched a newly raised commemorative flag flap in the breeze on the 125-foot center-field flagpole that used to be in play.

You know, for a city with a lot of vacant lots the city government of Detroit seems awfully against people doing good things with that one.

Not sure what you mean. Not disagreeing, I just don't know much about it.

I agree that they should turn old Tiger Stadium into a park with the old ballfield kept up. Not sure what the city is doing to hinder others about that. You can say the city should, and I agree... but the city of Detroit is in the middle of a major mess, made worse by MI's outrageous law that let's the Guv impose his will and completely negate democracy. All in all, I agree it's a shame... but given the circumstances, I'd think the Tiger's oughta do it... or some private money, maybe one of the car companies now that they're doing better, maybe a joint project with the UAW... but I don't see how the city can do anything more than just bless the idea and encourage others...

I'm bit surprised they didn't put an option on it or something just as measure of gratitude for the finish.

I think they're showing him a ton of respect by basically letting him decide when he wants to retire. I think he'll get one year deals until he's ready to retire. He's already been on record saying that Detroit is his last stop.
