Not even looking at their minor league prospects, I really like what they have going at the major league level. Hosmer, Moustakas, Gordon, Butler, Francoeur, Salvador Perez..they have a pretty exciting young group of players that are all already at that level. I think their pitching is an obvious concern, but they'll be a fun team to watch. They're certainly building a team the way a small market team should.

They were supposed to be the next Rays-like team, took 2/3 from the Angels to start the season and are now 3-9. What happened?

Positional core is there, pitching is not. Sanchez has had a rough start I think. Might need to trade some of the offensive depth for another arm or two.

KC (now 3-12 with a 10 game losing streak) is a good reminder to all of the know-it-all baseball writers that... when it comes to predicting prospects, you never really know.

I agree with Hardball's point that team broadcaster shouldn't exactly dictate that teams decisions.

This proves once again, you can never put too much stake into prospects. It's good to be optimistic but hard to say that will lead to long-term success. Reminds me a bit of the Cavalry with Wieters/Reimold and expecting the O's to have more success than they have had with that group as a whole(and earlier). The Royals were even more hardly regarded playing in an easier division. Like I've said about the Orioles for years, I don't think the Royals have done all the wrong things, I think they've gotten a bit unlucky too in things not working out for them as they should be better on paper. Maybe things turn the tide for the Royals in a few years?

Pitching prospects, I'll agree to a point.

Position players, though? I saw an article (I think Monday) showing the Royals lineup from the day before and every single player was age 28 or under; the oldest player was Jeff Francouer, who should have been dumped for Wil Myers already anyway.

That team just needs to find some pitching somewhere. That's the most difficult part, but between hoarding prospects and making deals like Cabrera for Sanchez they've been trying.
