In terms of the whole, "he's a local so you have to like him" -- snark aside, I don't think you should be required to. I'm much more intrigued than I would be if say he were from Chattanooga, Tennessee. I remember before he hit really big when he threw out the first pitch at an O's game before the 2004 Athens Olympics (one of the worst first pitches I've ever seen btw), that was a lot of fun to see. And yeah, it's easier to root for him and maybe overlook some of his shortcomings than a typical fan. However, I don't think you should just blindly root for him.

I just think he seems like a douche. No more, no less. Doesn't have anything to do with how good he is at his job. Everyone around here knows I'm the last guy to just "hate' on someone because of hype, I can easily applaud someone for their athletic accomplishments if they're worthy, which he clearly is.
I don't really care much about competitive swimming though, so I can't really say I watch him that often either.
I have no idea what the point of this post is now that I read it back. I don't feel like deleting everything I just wrote, so you all must suffer through this nonsensical rubbish.

ESPN: Michael Phelps ending retirement
The 22-time Olympic medalist will compete for the first time since the 2012 London Games at a meet in Mesa, Ariz., on April 24-26.
"I think he's just going to test the waters a little bit and see how it goes," Bowman said by phone from Baltimore. "I wouldn't say it's a full-fledged comeback."

Good, now we can keep him in the March Madness Olympian Bracket

Posnanski: Don't Call It A Comeback
"I'm enjoying being in the pool," Michael Phelps says. “I’m going to get sick of saying that.”
“I’m getting sick of hearing you say it,” Bowman says.
“Well, it is fun,” Phelps says. “It’s a lot funner than golf.”
What is a perfect ending anyway?

What an idiot. There are cops all over the place near that tunnel right now with all the construction going on.
If the drunk driving part of it is legitimately drunk and not just like a .09 or something, then I hope he goes to prison. I know he won't, because this country treats drunk driving like a freaking joke instead of attempted homicide like it should be, but I hope they make an example out of him (and then increase penalties across the board) if he was in fact hammered.

Second DUI arrest in 10 years. I hope he never gets another endorsement deal.
And I'd bet you money that he's not just a .09. I doubt a local officer would hook him up unless he was clearly under the influence.

I'm really disappointed in him, not to say I'm exactly surprised. He talks about not making the same mistake twice and does exactly that.

How in the world does any celebrity not use a driver, cab, uber, pay some fan on the street to drive him, etc etc.
Just so so moronic.

Just so so so dumb to make this mistake.

Certainly screwed up and yeah, someone with his money should make sure he doesn't have to drive anytime he may end up drinking.
Like Mack, I'll also be interested to see how intoxicated he was.

I don't know how reputable you want to consider them, but TMZ reported that his BAC was nearly twice the legal limit:
Our sources tell us ... the USA Olympic legend was pulled over around 1:40 AM in his white Land Rover. We're told he bombed his field sobriety test ... and his B.A.C. was almost twice the legal limit.
Because of the "almost" qualifier, I'm guessing it was .14 or .15

I don't even know how he could go 85 in a 45 down there.
That in and of itself is dangerous.

If Beaner doesn't like a person, you know they must really be a douche. That's all the proof anyone should need. Case closed.

He spent 8 hours at the Horseshoe Casino gambling, drinking and eating and can't afford to hire a private car to drive him home? Repeat offenders ( I don't care if it was 10 years) should lose their driving privileges...

Was he drunk the first time or just underage? EDIT: He blew a .08 in 2004. So borderline. The underage thing is bullshit, IMO.
I think you should permanently lose driving privileges after your first DUI. Though I think being in the vicinity of .08 should be lesser than if you're clearly drunk. But if you are obviously drunk and shouldn't be driving, I'd have absolutely no leniency. Mandatory significant prison time and you never get to drive a car again.
I don't have a good plan for how to distinguish what I would consider being clearly hammered and a threat to society versus having had a few and being over the current legal limit, but actually physically being ok to drive a car, though. Definitely a tricky thing.

If guilty, I hope he goes to prison and is never allowed to operate a vehicle again. Though obviously neither will be the penalty.
