Why the giant drop from a peak in 2014 to 2018?

Time Zones

2014 was Brazil which I think was only an hour different from EST.  2018 was Russia

I don’t follow. Was the game in 2018 televised at like 5am?

11 am EST

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

Might also have been less viewer engagement with that tournament overall due to the US not being there.

yeah I think that's your answer, timezones don't matter for the final played on a Sunday

That is only partially true. For soccer fans its totally correct. But for casual viewers it absolutely matters especially for those in the Mtn or Pacific time zones. Same reason college football is biased toward east coast teams. West coast teams don't get seen by the east coasters.

FIFA has put out the post WC rankings.  Before it all started I said the US had the toughest group going in. So how did it look in hindsight?

Here are the composite rankings:

Group A - 126

Group B - 70

Group C - 88

Group D - 78

Group E - 76

Group F - 75

Group G - 75

Group H - 108

So lets dispense with the US should have waltzed through the group stage. After the fact they had the toughest group, at least by this metric.

Are you talking about the Fifa rankings that have an abysmal Belgium team still ranked 4th?

We can quibble all day about the way FIFA does its rankings. But they also do it consistently bad across the board....lol. ELO is probably a better data set but the FIFA rankings are still illustrative of my point.

Why is Brazil still #1 and not Argentina?

When France lost the final, Mbappe was given 10 days off by his club team to rest and recover before returning to finish the grind of league play.

So what did Mbappe do? Took off less than 3 days and showed up back to train. That is commitment.
