England is a middle of the road Pot 1. We could have done worse for sure. What really matters is the Pot 3 and 4 teams we get.

Do we really need to twirl the balls all around, then wait for them to settle every single time?  Clearly they were all coached to that.  I don't blame them but FIFA is really milking this.

So England, Iran, and the winner between Wales and Scotland/Ukraine.  Doable. We can get a result against all of these teams.

 

Poor Mexico. I think they drew what is the Group of Death. Argentina, Mexico, and Poland are tough outs. Saudi sucks but thats three quality teams.

This actually is a decent draw. They advance and are paired with Group A which gives them a much more winnable knockout match.

 

All in all I'll take this.

I didn't realize this was going to be Thanksgiving Week.  For the past few years I've started taking that whole week off since most of my lab takes Christmas week off and I actually like working that week because it's so quiet.

 

So yeah - much as it annoys me that they had to move it from summer that works out pretty perfectly for me!

All of Scotland Wales and Ukraine are capable of beating us and advancing. Love having Iran in the mix though

My soccer loving friend said that this is actually a bad break for USA. He said that Iran is a tough P3 team, but more importantly, they eliminated the chance of getting one of the worst P4 teams, and now they might get Wales, who's actually better than them.

In the letter, a copy of which was obtained by AFP Friday, it said that Iran had pledged to FIFA that it would end its policy of "gender apartheid" by allowing women to attend matches.

"But not only has Iran broken that promise by continuing to bar women from entering a stadium but women are beaten, abused and threatened," it added.

United for Navid said Iran "continues to ignore" FIFA's requests to show "basic adherence" to human rights.

 

They have banned Russia, so there is precedent. To all of us I'm sure, it would have made sense for them to ban Iran before the draw. But this is FIFA, so we do need to check our common sense at the door.

What I had read about Italy was far more speculative (and from an Italian based site, FWIW), based simply on them being the highest ranked team not in the pool. Of course with England plus Wales/Scotland/Ukraine already in Group B, they wouldn't put Italy there too...they'd have to make bigger changes to the draw.

IF they do eventually decide to ban Iran, it would probably make more sense to replace them with either Australia or UAE, depending on what happens in the play-in with Peru.

Oh man, love Scotland and of course the US.  That would be a tough match for me to watch and would be totally neutral.  In fact I would probably root for a tie but will be happy for either team if they win.  Brutal.
