Sonny was definitely of his time. He sported a bit of a gut, smoked cigarettes on the sidelines, and took hits that today would result in five-figure fines. He was a pass-first guy in a run-first league, and at one time shared the NFL's single season record for TD passes with Johnny Unitas at 32.

Sonny is as iconic as they come to the area. He will be sorely missed. There have been many times where I'd tune into Washington radio broadcasts just to listen to him. Great personality, knew his stuff, and obviously a HoF player. Very sad day here in the DC Metro area.

Frank, Sonny, and Sam was the greatest 3-man booth of all time, and no one can convince me differently.

It's kind of a shame that Sonny spent much of his career playing for lousy teams, first with Philly and then Washington. By the time the Redskins began to perk up under George Allen in the early 70s, age and injuries had begun to catch up to him. He missed much of Washington's Super Bowl run in 1972 with a ruptured achilles.
Sonny does have an NFL championship to his credit. He was Norm van Brocklin's backup on the Eagles' 1960 title team.

They were.
I wasn't a Redskins fan and I'd tune in just to hear those guys interact.

That's a bummer. One of the more self-aware pop stars I think we've had. Absolutely love his cameo in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.

Greg Brown, guitarist for the band Cake, at 56. Wrote the song The Distance, which I may or may not have listened to hundreds of times as a teenager with the bass cranked up.

He didn’t have a huge role in the movie, but to me his signature line will always be “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” from Apocalypse Now. RIP.
