All linebackers play the run? News to me. Having an LB spy takes away one of the options (to keep the ball) assuming the LB does his job.

Ive always felt NFL defenses are generally too fast for the option at the pro level anyway once they get accustomed to it.

He'd be playing the run first on read option unless he's playing man on a TE going out, and in that case he's not going to be the spy anyway.

I agree about a typical option, but this is different.

I'm talking about the option where RG3 runs with the ball with a tailing RB and either keeps it himself or pitches it back to the RB.  Not sure what you're talking about.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

The option that they actually feature. ;)

The one without the pitch where the QB is going to threaten the edge, while the RB goes more between the tackle and guard and the decision on who keeps is made right away based on how the DE or OLB (4-3 or 3-4) reacts to it.

I think the best way to defeat the pistol is how the Steelers played it last year. When they held down for the whole game. 8-9 in the box make him beat you with the deep throw rely on your man coverage.

"The Steelers swarmed Washington's precocious star on Sunday, keeping Griffin in check during a dominant 27-12 victory. Griffin completed just 16 of 34 passes for 177 yards and a score while managing 10 yards rushing"

You take away his gimmick offense lets see how he plays.

IIRC he had a touchdown or two taken away on horrible calls.

Yep - and it was also the rookies like 5th or 6th game of his professional career. His production that day could have very well been a dazed rookie just as much as the way Pittsburgh played him, probably a combination of both. It's not an easy field to win in (Heinz). I think that point above, while valid in it's argument in some ways, is way overstating it, IMO.

One way to handle the pistol is straight up good tackling.

I don't buy the whole its a rookie dazed and confused when he came out of the gates like he did against the saints.  A lot of games the Redskins were in it till the end.  I think a blue print to beat the pistol is stack the box don't let them run and tackle everyone.  I remember watching that game and even when RGIII would hand off the tackled him because when you do the options reffs can not call it.  Now I am sure this played havoc on his psyche and thats why he had a tough game.  Plus Rob is right good tackling does the trick as well.  You can not let those am I going to hand the ball off or not plays get to through.  Once they started hitting him the skins stopped calling the fakes once the Steelers started scoring the skins had to play catch up.

To add to this once you stack the box you take away all short throws which RGIII is known for and make him throw over your head.
