Had this conversation with a friend last night.

Who do you think is the best overall brewery in terms of QUALITY BEER (NOT marketing, or success, or anything else but TASTE).

Troegs or Weyerbacher?

Its probably Troegs, but boy has Nugget Nectar fallen off.  It was easily one of the best beers I've ever had 4 years ago, and each spring it gets progressively worse.  Is it year round now?  I see it on tap here all the time now.

The Simcoe IPA Weyerbacher makes is pretty good.

I think it is year round now (It's at least produced WAY more now)

It's a very close battle for me

Yuengling!

No, seriously, it's my go-to, but obviously isn't all that great. Works for me though.

Between these two, Troegs, though I haven't had either enough to be fully trusted with a question like this.

I'm going to go with Yards but according to this month's Philly Beer Scene magazine Victory in Downington is the best. Both breweries have excellent Pale Ales and Saisons.

I like Yards, but Troegs and Weyerbacher are definitely better IMO

Victory is super good too though.

The correct answer is Stoudts.

Troegs nugget nectar and perpetual IPA are both great. I need to try more beers from both breweries to really decide.

Yards and Victory have fantastic saisons and some other very strong beers. George Washington porter and Headwaters pale ale are good examples.

Tired Hands is a PA sleeper as well.

BSL meetup at a brewery!?!?

My first reaction is to say Troegs, but Victory is another one that's certainly worth consideration, their Storm King Stout is still regarded as one of the best out there.

I bought some Weyerbacher tonight. So far I've had the last chance IPA, which was decent. Ranked it a 3.5 on untapped.

Troegs, in my opinion. I love their beer, and they have a badass tap room. Great food there. Also, Troegs gets points for making some outstanding small-batch stuff, like Splinter. I traveled to the brewery to try a bottle and it was easily one of the best sours I've ever had. Weyerbacher is third for me behind Victory. Nothing much blows me away by Weyerbacher, though I do enjoy their barleywines. Love Storm King, Hop Devil, and Hop Wallop from Victory. Oh and Golden Monkey, of course.

Troegs also has Mad Elf which is a top notch barleywine.

Looking at a list on wiki  I've narrowed my list down to the following PA breweries.  In no particular order

Victory, Troegs, Stoudts, Weyerbacher, Yards, Sly Fox and honorable mention to Penn Brewing.

My next step will be to try and rank these breweries from 1 through 6.

Great thread,  in another a week or so we should get a thread going where we rank the Maryland Breweries from First to Worst, that should generate some solid discussion.

So I've had Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA, Double Simcoe IPA, Merry Monks, and Verboten.

All solid, but nothing special imo.

Going to Victory tomorrow!

You guys need to try their non IPA beers. That's the good stuff from Weyerbacher!

This.   IPA's are fine, but I want a brewery that has a more rounded collection of beers.   Still not sure If I'm putting Weyerbacher in my top two though.

I did try two non IPAs.

But I'll try those other suggestions too.

Quality of IPAs is important to me. I tried 4 beers from them in styles I like a lot, and didn't come away impressed. That's telling.

Had a great time at Victory today. Ranch IPA was the highlight, but Storm King, some lighter summer type beers, and a best bitter were quite good as well.

Storm King is Great.  Their Headwaters Pale might be the best beer they make.  Agree with you about their summer beers,  the Hefeweizen they make is a great session beer.   A bit surprisingly their Fest Bieer (their Oktoberfest brew) isn't that good.

Yeah, had Headwaters on cask. I didn't mention it because I've already had plenty of it, but it is really goods.

Yeah, I agree about the fest.
