So you're thinking Stevens would go to UNC? That's not exactly completely far-fetched either but I expect Roy to still be there for a while.

Roy Williams is 63 this year. John Wooden retired at 64, Gary Williams at 65, Dean Smith at 66, Bobby Knight at 68, Jim Calhoun at 70, Adolph Rupp at 71.

I wonder how long some of these guys (Williams, K (66), Boeheim (68)) may coach.

So where does Butler go from here? And more importantly, can they remain relevant? I'm sure it had to be on their mind that they probably wouldn't keep Stevens forever, but it has to be a gut-punch to have to replace him right before they join the Big East.

All AD's have short-lists of potential candidates in case something happens -- at Butler, it's even more necessary to follow the basketball scene since its their major(and likely only) revenue generator. Barry Collier, the AD, is a former Butler coach, so he should know better than anyone what to do. I'm sure he's spent even more time following top targets the past 3-4 years in light of all their success.

They had some success prior to Stevens, obviously not the kind that Stevens experienced. He certainly made the job more attractive. Being in the Big East doesn't have to be a deterrent, they get to take on top programs they previously didn't. I'm not counting them out like many others are. That said, they have their work cut out for them.

And Rupp was mandatory retirement. I thought Roy was a little younger. I guess it's entirely possible K outlasts Roy Williams.

Maybe it's just me, but age aside, Roy seems further away from his prime than K does anyway. JMO.

Yeah, I didn't realize how old Roy was, thought he was like 60. I think being at UNC for like a decade compared to K being there for 30+ years, is why Roy might be around a little longer.

Something not really talked about is Coach K as Team USA coach and Duke. Does he step down in a few years to concentrate on USA?

I think that's also why it's easy to think of him as being significantly younger. K's been a head coach since 1975; Williams didn't get his start until 13 years later, though he was an assistant at Carolina for a decade.

ESPN: What's next for Butler? (Insider)

http://insider.espn....man/post?id=135

From the article, it sounds like it's going to be someone with Butler roots. I think the idea of Collier taking the job for a year is a rather attractive option. It allows them to cast a wider net and probably appeases the current roster.

It almost certainly would have been Matthew Graves, but Stevens’ top assistant left this past offseason for a head coaching job at South Alabama, and Graves told ESPN.com that he was definitely staying at South Alabama.

Timing is everything and in this case, you can bet Graves is wishing he hadn't taken the South Bama job.
