So, my guess is he will go down to extended ST soon and throw?

If he throws ok and things are good for him, maybe go to AFL?

That sounds like a plan they would be looking at, don't you think?

If he's shut down for the season that sounds more like he'll get another MRI once the inflammation is down to see if there is any damage then visible. Throw a little and see how he feels. He won't sniff the AFL. If he's lucky and everything breaks right maybe he gets some work in during fall instructs. If there are any setbacks could be looking at a lost 2015. If they wait until the spring and then he ends up with surgery anyway, could be 2015 and start of 2016 on the shelf.

Don't like this:

@MikeNewmanRS: Was on attendance for Harvey’s final start. Velocity fell off a cliff in the 4th and he was sitting at 90 mph by the 5th. #Orioles

Not getting surgery just sounds like avoiding the inevitable.

That's what I'm wondering.

How similar is this to Bundy?

Different arm action; different body; similar symptoms.

MRI was clean, and you couldn't see it in his performance recently. Could have caught it before that point this time. I think they are being over cautious, but I'm not complaining.

Like Nick said, probably will be another MRI later, but if you are playing it safe now, should keep it safe and rest til next season.

That velo drop worries me though. First I'd heard of that.

But does him having a diff body and arm action mean he's more likely to avoid surgery?

Seems to me that surgery is going to happen.

When does rest EVER work?

Btw..this really sucks. Otoh, if he gets the surgery done early, you get it out of the way.

I will say that if some team values him highly right now, I would be more apt to deal him for a good target we have through at least next season.

So can he just have TJ as well, get it out of the way early?

If they would have listened to me 13 months ago he would be on his way back by now.

Kidding...sort of.

I can't imagine anyone is interested in dealing for a broken Harvey. Hopefully he works past this quickly and can continue developing. As he currently stands there is a fair amount of work still ahead of him if he's going to realize his potential, and that's not taking into account any of these set backs. He needs reps big time; hopefully he's out of action for as short a time as possible.

Ugh. It really sucks how frequently pitchers have major arm injuries (hopefully this isn't that). It's a real problem for the sport.

If I had to guess, this is because of them being overworked in HS and college...or at least that is part of it.

Not sure there is anything MLB can do about it.

Sure. I'm not saying there is.

You just having so many innings on an arm. Bottom line. Baseball throwing motion isn't natural and puts torque on the elbow. No one is immune, I don't care how good your mechanics are. I don't care how you go about training or keeping care of your arm.

Coming home from the game I heard Terry Ford on 105.7 The Fan quoting Orioles Hangout Tony Pente's concern on Harvey.  Have to agree with Tony's take... hope for the best, but the worry that rest alone will not be sufficient will remain.

Very unfortunate... but you give him every test, and hopefully catch a break that there is no severe damage.

For a system that is pretty 'meh' overall, this is another blow.

Btw...this is why we need real depth. We consistently place on our hopes on the arms of a few and now, one is recovering from TJ surgery and another probably will be.

Gausman next?

Pessimistic view here, but it seems that every one of these things ends the same: rest for a month or two, it accomplishes nothing, have surgery, move on.

It's amazing that no one has been able to figure anything out regarding preventing these arm injuries. Certainly doesn't seem like the issue is getting better. Quite the opposite, actually.

I'm not sure what they can do.

I mean, really, after a pitcher's senior year of HS, any prospect should B-Line to Dr. Andrews office and get bamboo ligaments and be done with it. Hell it'd probably HELP their draft stock.
