ESPN: Multiple outdoor games discussed

Am I the only one who thinks this an awful idea?

ESPN: Sources: NHL finalizing 6 outdoors

So yeah I think this is a terrible idea. Maybe the NHL thinks they only have a few more years of this anyways, so why not try to milk as much as you can out of it. By the time, the Caps host, will this be as big of a deal?

Ugh I don't like this at all.  Part of what makes the WC so special is that there is only one a year.  I was fine with them having 2,  Winter Classic on New Years Day and the Heritage Classic a month or so later in one of the Canadian cities, but this is too much.

I've loved the idea of an LA version since I heard people discussing it after the original. Other than that, no. This is just another case of Bettman thinking that if a bit of something is good, a lot more is really good.

Just hope he doesn't throw in a dozen expansion teams so they can hold Winter Classic games in Wembley and Maracanã and Beijing National stadiums.

I don't see the appeal of this one and think it's a bad idea.

You don't see the appeal of hockey outdoors on a perfect 68 degree afternoon?

I think 6 is too many, but I do like the idea of more than 2. I think more cities should have the privilege to host something like this. It really is special. And I don't think it's appeal is due to how scarce the offering is, but rather because hockey, outdoors, is just awesome.

I think one in the US/one in Canada is fine.

Last time I checked Hockey is a winter sport that's played on ICE.

They played a preseason game in Vegas in the early 90s. I guess the technology is there for this to happen.

The ice at the verizon center gets bad in May when it starts getting warm outside.  What's the playing surface going to be like at an outdoor event.  Sure it might not be as hot out, but you can't exactly crank up the AC.

I'm sure it's easier to use a custom-made ice sheet one-time than one that gets reused over/over. I trust that the NHL looked into it, else they wouldn't be strongly considering it this much to the point where the news leaked.

Remember what the ice looked like in the Pit/Was game at Heinz Field?   They had to move that game to the evening just so it would "cool" down a little bit and even then there were still puddles all over the ice.

Yeah remember the former, the game didn't seem that bad. I think the clear difference is they were expecting colder weather in Pittsburgh. I liked the game at night as it turned out.
