During the year, Denver:

Lost to California by 11
Lost to Colorado State by 7
Lost at Southern Miss by 11
Lost at Stanford by 13

Finished the regular season winning 17 of their last 18 games. (17 of 19, factoring in the WAC Tourney.)

Entering tonight, Denver was:

I'm not sure why they are charging $25 to this game as well. If people don't care that much (and apparently they don't care enough to go to the games as judged by the attendance) why aren't they lowering the price? In comparison, Robert Morris charged $20 for reserved seating and $15 for general admission to an arena that seats a lot less and much bigger brand opponent.

The funny thing is that the commentators were both saying what a big crowd it was, so I guess by NIT standards it was big. The student section was empty, but that's due to Spring Break. Worst time to host a basketball game ever.

They can't control the student section but do what it takes to get people to the games especially ones that aren't exactly premier games. The goodwill should be rewarded later. I think offering discounted tix would mean more concession $$$ anyways. But get creative -- why not offer tickets to incoming students at a lower cost for example, give some to loyal season ticket holders and as a thank you for their dedication. I'm not saying just let everyone in for free, but I think they can do better even for the NIT.

Re: The tickets... they really should just give them away, and fill-up as much as possible. That good-will would be more financially beneficial long-term than any dollars obtained through actual sales.

Looks like MD should easily control the boards, and dominate inside.

Yeah, that's a step farther than I'd go, but really anything that gets a substantial crowd. I'm not saying they should sell out. But getting 10k shouldn't be unrealistic. One other idea I thought of is inviting former season ticket holders to attend for free or at a low price.

At Colorado in 2011, Boyle bought the students tickets IIRC (tickets are usually $5 for students there). Not going to say that event percipitated a culture change, but the last year there's been interest like never before -- certaintly when I was there. Of course, you need to win too, but I think the Terps will be good enough where they can benefit from this kind of thing. Since student tickets are free(and they're on spring break), Turgeon could buy tickets for low-income families to attend.

Game time is 7pm tonight.

I wouldn't be surprised if they actually get worse attendance. Atleast on Tuesday, there were no "real" games they were competing against, not sure how many even die-hard Terps fans care more about this game than March Madness. Now if they play on Mon or Tues, they could draw decently, depending on the opponent. If they raise tickets to $50 since these are $25, OTOH probably not.

They absolutely should give tickets away. From an economic standpoint this game is found money. You now have two extra games where you can gain revenue from concessions and souvenirs. Charging $25 to a game that will most likely have less attendance than the first doesn't really make much sense. You need incentives to get people in the door and a free ticket would be a huge one.

They'd counter with it costs $$$ to run the game operations. But you are completely right. At bare minimum, they should be discounting the tickets, rewarding season ticket holders, trying to bring back old season ticket holders, trying to get new season ticket holders (offer them to those have football season tickets). As you said they'd make up for it (somewhat) with concession and souvenirs. I think they think if the tickets $5-10 people would treat it as such. But that's just the wrong approach. People don't want to spend $25 to see a second rate tournament when they can watch a first-tiered tourney from their couch.

Glad the Terps won. Len is not even close to being ready for the NBA. Hope he thinks long and hard about it. I can't imagine him passing up the crazy cash, but long term, he has a better chance for multiple contracts staying one more year.

Again, only reason he shouldn't go is if he's NOT a lottery pick and maybe if he's NOT a guaranteed first-round pick. NBA values potential over production in many cases and the longer he stays, the more weaknesses he has are exposed. I know it's not what you want to hear, but yeah making crazy cash once is worth it in many cases. Some players only end up getting one contract so make the most of it.

Saw this on the MD FB page under the comments:

University of Maryland Maryland will next play the winner of the Alabama-Stanford game to be played Saturday.

Which means the game would have to be played on the road regardless of who wins with the women hosting that day, unless there's some alternative campus facility.

I think you're misreading that. The Alabama/Stanford game is Saturday. MD plays the winner of that game on Tuesday. If Alabama wins, MD goes there; if Stanford wins, the game will be at Comcast.

It wasn't pretty but it was a win.

The bigs just didn't come to play tonight and were pushed around by smaller interior players. Denver is one of the last programs to still use the Princeton style and that means teams don't usually prepare well enough for it because they don't see it. MD went on a huge run within the last 5 minutes to shut on the door on what would have been a disappointing loss to a physically inferior team.

I like how Turgeon continues to be more open to change and at one point going five guards to match up with Denver's smaller lineup because his height failed to respond. I hope it continues, run, press, play 1-3-1 zone - do what you must to best hlep put your players in a position to win.

I stand corrected.

Playing Bama would be interesting since KA's first choice was Anthony Grant.
