My thoughts with the murders row comment. I guess the Dodgers feel like that they can compete in the short-term with him. If they win the World Series during his contract, I'd feel pretty good.

I'm just basing this on the eye test and without doing any research but I would guess that Ethier's adjusted stats are more impressive than Swisher's based on home park. I think some defensive metrics rate Swisher well but I think Ethier is better defensively as well.

Swisher has easily had the much more productive ML career.

His defense is on par with Ethier, who isn't great out there although his defense the last season and a half is improved.

I would say that he is likely the better defender but Swisher is the overall more productive player and will sign for a lot less money than what AE just got.

Yeah, hard to think they won't regret this deal in some capacity. Although if they're winning, it's easy to forget about bad contracts.

when you pay $2.15 billion, you probably don't mind spending this kind of $$$ to try to win immediately.

And no one cares about bad contracts when you are winning. So if the Dodgers win, won't be an issue.

Even with their willingness to spend, it's hard to believe that they couldn't have avoided giving up much of the value they did to take on those contracts. I'd argue the collection of players they got collectively had virtually no trade value.

After this trade, I seriously doubt the decision making of the Dodgers brass. I think it's terrible to take on the money they did for the talent they got back, made even worse by what they gave up.

They didn't really give up that much. And those were some huge selection contracts but we aren't talking about some 40 year old men. These guys are still in their primes and although expensive will bring some value. It's the same as signing 3 free agents these guys just weren't in the fa market.
