But a utility player can still get a load of at bats. You just use him several times a week to rest different starters. Everybody stays fresh and you utility guy can stay decent hitting wise instead of always coming in cold.

 

And you can avoid Buck's Funday Sunday lineups.

 

 But do you really want to sit Manny and Schoop once a week?  That's 1/6 of the season.

But that's why he was a utility player....  if he could hit more "on demand" he wouldn't have been a utility player, he'd have been a starting player somewhere.... just like he would have been here if not for Schoop....

Sorry for being confusing....

 

The reason he couldn't be a regular here was Showalter's decision to play Schoop a year earlier than everybody else thought was appropriate....  which put Flash in a Util role here through no real fault of his own.... and once he was in that role and didn't hit in that role, then everybody started seeing him as nothing but a good-glove, no-bat spare part....

 

If he had been able to hit in a utility role, he would've ended up with a starting job someplace.... but he didn't, and everybody forgot he could have been a perfectly good starting 2B...  he just needed a steady job, but BRob's return screwed it up the 1st time, and Buck gave it to Schoop based on faith the second time... and there wasn't a third time...

 

Nobody's fault, that's just the way the ball bounced... and by normal people's standards, he's become rich anyway... for playing ball....

 

I wish he could've stayed.... I hope he does well...

No not quite, certainly. But between Beckham, Manny, Schoop, and OF there are loads of at bats you could have given RF. And I would sit Manny and Schoop more than they do (not much, but some), especially Manny when he gets in his swing for me mode. Buck shouldn't put up with that.

You have to play to be a leadoff candidate.

Schoop and Manny play everyday.

Beckham will likely be a 500+ at bat guy. You aren’t putting him in the OF.

He makes no sense for how the roster is built.

That’s why a guy like Flaherty is what you want. Someone who can play all the positions, make no money and don’t have to worry about things if only plays once every 10 games or so.
