If Givens, O'Day, and Britton are all healthy, there's a good chance they pitch about 200 innings with a sub 2 ERA, which is of tremendous value, especially considering many of those innings would be high leverage.

It's the cheapest and most achievable way to get 200 IP of sub-2 ERA... and it shows up more often than once every 5th game too...

Yep.  It will be the best part of the team.

I liked what I saw from Givens last year but lets slow the roll on expecting him to be dominant over a full year. Could happen, but too small a sample size

MASN: http://www.masnsport...eakfast-47.html

* Mychal Givens walked a batter in the ninth, but he kept the score 4-3 by retiring Donaldson and Bautista.

Givens has allowed three earned runs (four total) and nine hits, with three walks, in 6 2/3 innings. However, he’s also struck out 13 batters.

What is Showalter seeing with Givens?

“Statistically, it’s pretty obvious,” he replied.

“Mike’s got good stuff. He gets a little flat-plained sometimes with his fastball and gets a little ... Jim Palmer’s got a great saying for it. He gets a little of the merry-go-round going instead of the Ferris wheel. He’s going side to side instead of straight, even though his arm angle’s a little bit lower. And that’s what gets him out of whack a little bit and flatten his ball out. But Mike’s an athletic guy.

“I think we’ve all got to keep in mind how little pitching he’s really done professionally. He’s working on little things like his times to the plate and holding runners and understanding different parts of it. He’s got a chance to be a good piece for us and he’s learning from some of the best down there. But there’s some growing pains along the way.”

I am glad they pointed out that Givens has been fine in the past and its a SSS vs lefties right now.

To put some numbers on it:

2016: 23 PA, 1409 OPS (525 v RHB), 0 HR, 3 BB, 3 K

2015: 44 PA, 555 OPS (527 v RHP), 0 HR, 3 BB, 10 K

And in the minors:

2015: 129 PA, 608 OPS (452 v RHB), 1 HR, 6 BB, 31 K

2014: 107 PA, 631 OPS (553 v RHB), 1 HR, 17 BB, 18 K

2013: 72 PA, 573 OPS (623 v RHB), 0 HR, 8 BB, 13 K

I wouldn't expect him to dominate lefties like last year, but I do think he'll end up with really good numbers against lefties from this point forward.  650 or so OPS-against.

I think it's something worth keeping track of, but I don't agree that it's a problem that must be addressed rather than something that may just kind of be one of those things.  I don't have much worry at this point that he will be a liability against LHB moving forward.

He's definitely better against RHB than LHB, but he got lefties out really high clips in the minors and last season, just wasn't as dominating against them as he was against righties.

I think that once we get further down the road, the first 30 or so PA this year will be looked at as a fluke rather than anything resembling the norm.  I think people get too wrapped up in small samples of the most immediately recent results at the expense of track record.  Even someone with as limited a track record and experience as Givens.

Similar to ODay, you can see how lefties could pick him up well.

He has to get more in on the lefties.

I think he needs to pitch inside more to the LHB's. Flipped a decent changeup today that K'd  Espinoza on. He was big there the 6th.

Yep...this offseason, his focus needs to be on getting lefties out more consistently....and hopefully, preparing for the closers role.

I'm telling you, as many question marks as the Orioles may have, their bullpen is gonna be a strength for a while.

I'd love to see Givens as a set-up man.
