Ian Rapoport reports the Niners have traded for Christian McCaffrey. Carolina gets a 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks in 2023, and a 5th round pick in 2024. McCaffrey will play about 20 miles from where he played in college.

With a base salary of just $1,035,000 this year, McCaffrey fits in quite nicely with the 49ers this year. The Panthers, on the other hand, are going to eat some $18 million in dead cap next season, but if you're going to take a big cap hit, better to do it while you suck.

 

I'm a little surprised that Carolina didn't get at least one first-rounder for McCaffrey (and San Fran didn't  have one), but I'm sure the fact that McCaffrey hasn't played a full season since 2019 tempered trade expectations a bit.

I know, this is intense. I'm in trouble this week if he can't play, and it's Friday. Speculation is he'd see 10-15 snaps Sunday, given the importance of that game (3-3 and playing KC) - I hope we hear more later today.
