Why break up a good thing if you are Memphis?

In the January thread, I mentioned something similar. Birds of Bmore responded by stating:

Gay is owed nearly $18 million next season and over $19 million in 2014-15. As good as he is, he isn't that good....not enough for a small-market team like Memphis to want to go over the luxury tax threshold. Thing is, Gay is the one guy who can best matchup with Durant, and that's something Memphis probably won't be able to replace.

It is a shame, because that was a good Memphis team with playoff experience... they would have been a difficult out.

I guess this is a ripple effect of Peyton not getting that Super Bowl bonus check he was counting on.

Yeah this basically kills any thoughts of Memphis making a run. They'll still be tough, because it's tough to compete with Gasol and Randolph down low, but they're much more average now. A bummer for the league, IMO.

I agree. When they finally did the new CBA last year the league tried to sell us on how the heavier luxury tax would force more fiscal restraint among all teams, almost as if it were a "hard cap". But as we've seen so far, it's really only forcing the small-market teams to dump talent.
