On the Lindstrom point totally worth it for Hammel's contributions if nothing else. Wada got injured after he signed?, I'm not sure what was wrong with that. Players get injured and get paid. Am I missing something?

That was almost $10m on 2 MR that we could get as good or better performance from minimum salary players. MR is not the place to waste payroll, it's where you save it.

That $10m could have paid for any number of combinations of improvements in other parts of the lineup.

He might wind-up there (or never contribute at all), but the O's didn't sign Wada with the belief he was solely going to be MR.

We discussed this in the spring. Theirs is the minority view.

Well I hear Linda Ronstadt is looking for a guitar player.

Then they need new scouts, cause that's probably best case ;) I've seen a bit of video and was left very unimpressed, and someone who saw him live was even less impressed. If Chen ideally is your 4th starter, Wada is mop up/MR material.

I think it was more a matter of throwing some noodles at the wall and seeing what stuck. They hit on a couple, and missed on a couple. No big. I just didn't like the contract they gave him, I thought they overpaid by about 75%.

Just that DD might not be the save money on the bullpen guy that some of us are hoping for.

I am nervous that the O's are going to reward JJ with a multi-year (3-4) deal.

If that happens, I won't be too happy, but I'm not going to judge him for a move that he didn't make.

You gotta take the good with the bad. And as I already stated I'm fine with Lindstrom for if nothing else he brought us Hammel. I'll look at as a salary dump if you want with Lindstrom's salary to get Hammel.

I also don't think the goal is for Wada to be a reliever, if that's the case, yes it was a waste. What I was getting at though, was he injured before DD signed him?

For someone who thinks the Orioles are cheap, you shouldn't complain when they spend $$$.

You are not alone with that opinion, but many said the same thing about Chen. If healthy, Wada's ability to be effective is to be determined.

Who?

Several of the people we interviewed on the record, and quite a few of the people we spoke to off the record.
Including several members of other organizations who directly told me that Chen would have minimal chance at being successful.

Surprised that they didn't even think he could hold down a 5 slot for the O's.

I recall there being concern about him not making it to the 6th.

Yeah, there was some concern there too. I was a little worried too honestly. I did like his stuff quite a bit more than Wada though. An 88mph fastball, even with all the control in the world, just isn't going to get it done when your secondaries are average at best.

With foreign imports, you always have to be worried to a degree that they will have initial success because of unfamiliarity, and deception in the delivery. Once guys have seen them once or twice, that 5th inning area gets really dangerous, and who wants a starter that can't make it through 3 turns in the rotation?

I don't recall calling them cheap. I think they historically spend money in the wrong place, so even though they carry an 80-90m payroll, 20-30m of it is sunk into bad investments. That could be two all-stars at that salary.

I am happy they finally pulled the trigger on Gregg. They basically went without a long man all year so IMO they could keep Gregg on the roster. IMO, someone made the decision not to eat the contract. I think it came from the very top.
