Not exactly sure what will come of this, but I am interested to follow this story as it continues. I'm assuming it will lead to a new conference being created, unless the schools decide to go their separate ways.NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press the conference's seven non-football members have decided to break away from the Big East.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday night because some officials from those schools are still sorting through details and trying to figure how best to separate from the conference. No official announcement is imminent.
The seven schools that do not play FBS level football are St. John's, Georgetown, Marquette, DePaul, Seton Hall, Providence and Villanova. Officials at those schools have concerns about the direction of the conference and feel as if they have little power to influence it.
Commissioner Mike Aresco conferred by phone with the leaders of those seven schools earlier in the day, according to another person familiar with the situation, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

This is getting crazy. Now ESPN is saying that (despite the seven schools having the votes) they don't have the ability to dissolve the conference. This is going to get really messy if they want to keep the brand.
Oh, and for our Musketeer buddy Chris...

If ND and Louisville gets to join the ACC next year, does that mean that Maryland would be able to leave a year earlier than expected?Notre Dame coach Mike Brey told ESPN.com that the breakup of the Big East could allow Notre Dame and Louisville to join Syracuse and Pittsburgh in the ACC next year instead of having to wait the 27-month exit period.

Stands to reason they could, since Rutgers could also leave early. I'm sure neither the ACC or B1G wants an odd number of football teams.

I do not see them letting Maryland leave as long as they are trying to extort the 50 million transfer fee. Amazing the ACC wants 50 million from Maryland while they are luring schools from other conferences.Stands to reason they could, since Rutgers could also leave early. I believe that will come up about 50 million times in their legal brief in the lawsuit, as well.I do not see them letting Maryland leave as long as they are trying to extort the 50 million transfer fee.
