After a tough double-OT loss in Miami earlier this week, Maryland hosts #5 UNC tomorrow in College Park. The Terrapins are 13-8 overall, 3-4 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are are 19-3 overall, 6-1 in league play.

MD has won 2 of their last 3 vs. UNC, and 4 of the last 6. UNC's style of play under Roy Williams, was somewhat of a comfortable match-up for the Terps under Gary Williams. No matter how much talent the Tar Heels had, MD was comfortable playing a game in transition. Those Terps teams were not particularly good shooting teams. That weakness was mitigated, because their guards and wings could get out on fast-breaks and score points in the paint. The Terps are not walking the ball up the court under Coach Turgeon, but it remains to be seen how his scheme will match-up.

As the Terps were not able to finish in South Beach, MD runs the risk of falling two games under .500 in league play after tomorrow. With 5 road games in the final 8 regular season ACC games (including trips to Duke, and UNC), there is no better time for an upset win than tomorrow. Ending the first half of league play at .500, with a major win on their resume would leave the Terps in good shape overall.

I've seen some people worried about what type of crowd will be on hand tomorrow. While it is true that the lack of expectations from the Terps has led to some lackadaisical MD crowds this year, that won't be an issue with UNC in the house. The venom of most Terrapins fans might be saved for Duke, but UNC commands enough respect that there is no reason to worry about crowd intensity. If anything, MD's fans will probably help give the Terps a chance on the floor.

UNC has won 4 games in a row, and 13 of their last 14.

The Tar Heels have lost to UNLV, Kentucky, and FSU.
Among their wins are Michigan St, Wisconsin, Texas and South Carolina.

In their 6 league wins, their average win has been by 17 points.
In their loss at FSU, they were blasted, losing by 33.

UNC enters the game:

1st overall in PPG: 84.1
1st overall in Rebounds: 46.3
4th overall in Assists: 18.1
47th overall in FG%: .471

The Terps are:

154th in PPG: 69.4
85th in Rebounds: 36.5
314th overall in Assists: 10.7
186th overall in FG%: .432

UNC has recently loss Dexter Strickland to injury (done for the year). The Guard was averaging 7.5 ppg, with 2.1 assists per. Without him, the Tar Heels have 7 players averaging over 13.7 minutes per, and at 5.3 ppg and above.

UNC has 3 players scoring in double-figures, led by Harrison Barnes at 17.3 ppg. It was reported this afternoon that Barnes might miss tomorrow with an ankle injury (http://espn.go.com/b...le-for-maryland). At the minimum, you have to expect he will be slowed a bit.

The other two players that are scoring in double-figures are Tyler Zeller (15ppg, 9.7 boards), and John Henson (14.2ppg, 10 boards). The 6'11 Henson, and 7' Zeller are going to be a difficult match-up for the Terps to deal with inside. With Henson not having much weight, will the Terps use Len, and Weijs together at times tomorrow?

The Tar Heels are shooting 65% from the line, and 35% from 3 point land.

Tough for me to envision a way for MD to win this one. UNC might be the most talented team in the nation, and have too much size to boot.

Terps are doing a great job of converting at the foul line so far, and limiting their turnovers.

Also playing UNC nearly even on the boards, impressive since UNC is the best rebounding team in the country.

I want to say that I'm exceptionally proud of Len, Stoglin, Howard, Faust, Mosely, Padgett, and Weijs.

I want to say that I love our new coach. He is a great leader for the school and he uses his roster exceptionally well.

I want to say that the officiating was awfu in the 2nd half. Simply terrible. They weren't biased against MD, but more of the awful calls went against MD. The fourth foul on Len was as bad a call as I've ever seen.

Regardless of the officiating, UNC would have won the game. Their depth was just too much and we played so hard that we had to sputter at the end.

UNC is pretty breathtaking. They are definitely the most talented team I've seen this year.

I left Pankey and Parker out of the opening compliment. They didn't dog it, but I don't really see the intensity and desire out of them that I see in the rest of the squad.

Finally, I love Terrell Stoglin and I wouldn't want to play MD in the ACC tournament.

Losing two of their top guards for the rest of the season may bite them in the Tournament. Their backcourt just isn't that quick and I think Maryland exposed that today. Faust and Stoglin beat their guards on the dribble several times today and that is why this game was close. Maryland pretty much played as well as they could. In the end they ran out of gas. That is what Carolina does. Guys like Pankey and Weiss can't compete against the Zeller and Henson's.

I'm already worried about losing Turgeon to Kansas in 10 years. He's going to be that good at Maryland.

We know he can/will recruit and he'll hire the best staff he possibly can to recruit. I was worried when Gary left that we might get a better recruiter, but that we would lose some gameday coaching.

Turgeon is quickly proving that he is one of the best gameday coaches in the business.

MD is in good hands. I've been very critical of Kevin Anderson, but he made a home-run hire for the basketball program.

Worry about Turgeon leaving for Kansas after he wins a few games. I think he will be a good coach and a decent recruiter, but he hasn't proved anything as of yet. He isn't an alumni of Maryland and yes if a school like Kansas came calling you would have to listen but Maryland is one of the top jobs in College Basketball so you have to weigh all of that before you would leave.
